Last Saturday nights's racing card at the Lake
Moc-A-Tek Speedway saw Don Harvey pick up the win in the first appearance
of the Central New York Mini Sprints. Brian Malcolm put a two barrel
carb on his Sharkey's Fuels sponsored #32 to enter Sportsman competition
since the 358 Modified season is over, and he came home the winner of the
Sportsman feature. Jack Zeiner Jr. won his second consecutive Street
Stock feature while Jim Balutis won his first ever Pure Stock feature.
Nick Petok won the 250cc Micro Sprint feature in his first ever Lake
Moc-A-Tek start.
The Central New York Mini Sprint event was one of the richest
events
in club history thanks to the efforts of Red Brush and the Panther
Trucking team. Through their efforts at securing sponsorship for this
event, race winner Don Harvey collected over $750 for his winning
efforts. Hazleton, Pa's Steve Boyd led the majority of the feature, but
a late race pass by Harvey put the Oneonta, Ny resident in victory lane
with a hard fought victory. Boyd crossed the line second with polesetter
Phil Powerchik finishing third. Darrel Quackenbush and Jared Fink
completed the top five. Jeremy Vunk, Bob Brown, James Brsh, Cory Sparks
, and Tom Richard completed the top ten for the Central New York Mini
Sprints.
Briam Malcolm piloted his Sharkey's Fuels sponsored #32 to
victory
in the 20 lap Sportsman feature. Malcolm, who ran in the 358 Modified
class during the point season, dusted off his old Sportsman carb, bolted
it on, and went Sportsman racing for the evening. Lady luck smiled on
Malcolm as he drew an up front starting position which put him ahead of
some wild action during the opening laps of the feature. The closing
laps iof the feature saw some good racing as Alex Konopka attempted to
run Malcolm down, but Brian was too fast and picked up his first win of
the season over Konopka. Joey Grammes also entered as a Sportsman and
came away with a third place finish ahead of Tom Laner Jr. and Rocky
Rosetti. The second half of the top ten consisted of Cory Jenings, Bill
Moyer Jr., Larry Hendershot, Moose Shauger, and Ralph Mele completed the
top ten.
Jack Zeiner Jr. continued his comeback after two years of
inactivity
with his second straight feature wins in as many starts. The pilot of
the Moore's Tire Center #8 held off a late charge from Glenn Buchannon to
pick up the win. Jerry Liford, Neil DiBlasi Jr., and Ed Kudrako
completed the top ten. Mike Van Tassel, Tom Herman, Dennis Schaffer,
Nate Evans, and Jared Hayes made up the second half of the top ten
rundown.
Neil Petok was a surprise winner in Micro Sprint action.
Neil was
making his first ever Lake Moc-A-Tek appearance and it turned out to be
a winning performance. Geoff Quackenbush led all 20 laps for an apparent
victory, but lost that victory when his mount failed to pass muster in
post-race inspection. Quackenbush was disqualified, which gave the
victory to Petok. Drew Arntz finished second with Davie Franek, Todd
Hanlin, and Mike Keppler picking up the remainder of the top five spots
at the finish. Kevin Dries, Pat Potter, Ralph Utter Jr., Stephanie
Stevens, and Fred Venezia finished sixth through tenth.
Jim Balutis led the 15 lap Pure Stock feature from flag to flag
to
record his first career win. Balutis, a rookie in Pure Stock competition
this season, fought off the challenges of Eric Schmidt and Floyd Schmidt
in the non-stop feature to take the win.. Eric Schmidt finished second
with brother Floyd third. Gary Schoch finished fourth with track
champion Nate Evans fifth.
