History of Tennis
A summary on the history of tennis:
Walter Wingfield, an English retired army officer, introduced the game of tennis in 1874. The ancient game of tennis was played by hitting the ball with the palm of the hand. Sometime later, players wore white leather gloves to protect their hands.
Later that century, the first rackets came into use. They were made out of wood and were strung diagonally, but were soon replaced by the horizontal and vertical version, which we use today. In the beginning, all rackets were strung  hand by hand, but by the late 1930's the first stringing machines were in use.
Nowadays, rackets are much lighter and are made out of Titanium and Graphite.
The earliest tennis balls were made out of red rubber, nowadays, they are covered with a mixture of wool and man made fibres.
The men used to wear long white trousers, whilst the women wore long white skirts. Today, one can wear any colour except at Wimbledon where white is still the tradition.
