1.3.2.4B.1.2.1.4.10.  Sarah Jane Worsham "Sallie" b 14 Mar 1871 VA. (Ollie Curry, 2001) Ollie Curry's father was Sanders Baxter who d. 1963. His father, Sanders Baxter md. Sarah Jane Worsham "Sallie" in Slabtown, Cocke Co., TN, Dec 24, 1887. They were md by Charlie Goodnough. Sallie's "family lived in NC when my grandfather went to the town she lived in and met her. They lived around the area for about a year, then went by train to Texas, and bought land in Shannon, (Clay Co) TX, and raised their family. Sallie is bur in the Shannon Cem. Her cousin, went to Texas by train, and md William Alexander Baxter, Sanders brother. Her family thinks she was a mail order bride, but I told them she was a cousin of Sallie's, and Sallie probably got them together. I have Sallie's bible. My father was the next to youngest. Sallie had 12 children. Two children died, one as a baby, a girl, and one about 10 years of age, another girl. Sallie had heart trouble, and died in her early 50's. My father only knew his mother's name, not where she was from or anything. She could read and write, and corresponded with her family for years, but never went back to NC. The story that was passed down was that Sallie and Sanders walked 20 miles, crossed a railroad track into Tn to get married. The marriage license had Washburn as her maiden name, but I think now that was a mistake, it may have been how she pronounced it that it sounded like Washburn. (Ollie Curry, 2001) The family is in the 1900 Clay Co, TN census: Sanders Baxter 37 TN TN TN; Sallie 31 VA TN TN; Rosie E. 11TX; William A. S. 6 TX, Maud M. 4 TX; Holloway 2 TX; Thomas 0 TX. Sanders Baxter b. 1863 Cosby, Cocke Co. TN (md. Sallie Washam) was s/o John Baxter, Sr (b. 1817 Cosby, Cocke Co. TN) & Mary Elizabeth Carver (b. 1831 Cosby, Cocke Co. TN). (James Franklin "Jim" Baxter, 2001) The picture, courtesy David L. White, 2000, http://srmason.homestead.com/index.html, is of Weldon Baxter, Sarah Washam Baxter, Sanders Baxter & Jesse Baxter.

Sanders Baxter was b 16 Aug 1862 Cosby, Cocke, TN. Their children are: Rosa Elizabeth Baxter; William Alexander Sanders Baxter; Maude Mae Baxter; Haloway Baxter; Thomas Seldon Baxter; John Baxter; Omar Baxter; Sanders Baxter (Ollie's father); Sarah Edna Baxter; Lottie Rosine Baxter ; Eva Cornelia Baxter. (Lottie & Eva both died-one died as a baby & the other about 10 years of age but Ollie did not say which one was the baby. There were 12 children but only 11 are accounted for) Ollie's daughter, Brenda had a picture of Weldon Baxter, Sarah Washam Baxter, Sanders Baxter & Jesse Baxter on her web page at http://www.louisville.edu/~dlwhit02/baxter/page1.htm

(1/12-1870; 10-1880; 49-1920)  The following information was received from Frances Burkett, 2000:  "William Delaney Worsham brought his new bride, Mary Elizabeth Long out of Oklahoma to Texas in the year 1896, making their home in Mineola for a while then to Bowie, Texas.  After a short time in Mineral Wells, the young couple moved their family for the last time and settled in Graham where they purchased a farm north of town in the Flint Creek Community.  They remained on the farm until "Jake's" poor health required the move into town to be near the family physician.  Before failing health, Jake and his close friend, Homer Brigham worked together buying, selling or trading mules, horses and cattle in and around Young county.  Mr Brigham owned a truck and drove Jake and whatever livestock they had bought or traded to their destination.  Jake would sometimes buy some poor and neglected animal and with good feed, water and the necessary care, restore them back to stock worthy  of a good sale price.  He was known by his neighbors as a kind, generous and honest man.  Mary Elizabeth "Lizzy"  tended to her family, sewing to provide clothing, cooking and cleaning.  A quilt frame, hanging from the ceiling, always had a quilt in progress.  She was always ready to help out her neighbors.  She assisted in the deliveries of some of the neighborhood babies.  Her children remember coming home from school and always finding fresh baked sweet potatoes on the back of the wood stove in the kitchen.  Jake kept peanut hay in the loft of his barn.  The children and grandchildren would spend hours in the loft laughing, talking, playing with kittens and eating peanut.  The old well near the kitchen door provided the best drinking water in the country for the hot and thirsty visitor.  Jake b in Shelby Co, Tennessee  29 May 1871.  He came to Texas as a small child and later moved to Oklahoma.  He told his family of herding sheep when he was very small boy and of how lonely he would get.  The story is told that, as a young man, he bought and sold mules to the U. S. Army. (Cont.)
