Let's Scare Jessica to Death
copyright 1971
Alright, the title is incredibly lame.  Surprisingly, the movie isn't.  It's one of those eerie movies that doesn't outright scare you.  The atmosphere and subtle fears of Jessica will probably have an impact on you, either while watching it or hours after the movie is over.

The story goes that Jessica just got out of the looney bin, and she and her husband and a friend move out into the sticks.  The rural community they move into has a history, natch.  The townsfolk are weird and many of them have odd scars on their necks.  A hippie chick stays with Jessica and the guys and seduces them.  Jessica hears voices.  People are turning up dead.  Just what the hell is going on?  Is any of this real?  Is Jessica just crazy?  Is it a conspiracy by her husband to destroy an already whacked out woman's mind?  Hell, I don't know.  The movie doesn't try to explain things, which may be why it's effective.

I also need to mention that the acting is outstanding.  Zorha Lambert (no relation to Christopher "I enunciate the wrong syllables when I talk" Lambert) as the title character does a superior job of portraying someone with a slowly deteriorating mind.  The direction is also very good.  That was unexpected, considering it was  directed by John Hancock, who not only signed the Declaration of Independance, but also directed the incredibly gay
Prancer in 1989.

I first saw
LSJTD when I was ten years old, and years and years later, it was still with me.  There are scenes that might not be good on you if you're scared shitless of drowning.  But, as I said, it's not very violent or gory.  It goes for chills rather than thrills and it works.  Check it out if you like psychologic horror.
3 out of 5.
More subtle than shocking, but good entertainment if you like creepy stuff that will mess with your head.
