February 2001 Newsletter

Illinois
Red Hawk Riders

A Chapter of Women On Wheels®

The February 17th meeting began promptly at 10:00 a.m. at the Colonial Café in Crystal Lake, as usual. Those in attendance on this cold and blustery Saturday were: Lynda and Ralph DiGregor, Marge and David Thiessen, Lynn and Cary Dahlman, Maureen Shreeves, Sue McDonald, Shelle Young, Nora Quinn, Michelle and Jim Pecoraro, Susan Snyder, and Suzanne Palm. A couple of these folks were first-time attendees (or first-time-in-a-long-time-attendees) who found out about us through our web page and/or our flyer which was at the motorcycle show's WOW booth. We're glad they came to check us out and hope they'll keep coming back!

Red Hawk Riders'
2-Day Ride to Galena

July 14 & 15
Here's the plan: Meet at 8:00 a.m. all gassed up and ready to go (the bikes, not you). The Thiessen's have volunteered to organize a leisurely ride through some interesting backroads on our way to Chestnut Mountain, where we will enjoy a nice, liesureley lunch. Next, we can check out the Alpine sled for kicks (and try not to lose that nice lunch) and then ride Blackjack Road to Galena. Once in Galena, we can stroll the streets, visit the shoppes, or take in the historic sites for an hour or two before stopping for dinner. We will overnight at a local motel. We'll start the morning with breakfast, then head towards home via the scenic Stagecoach Trail, passing through Rockford with a stop for lunch. This will be a relaxing, enjoyable ride for all.

Observation Run
Lynda would like to organize an observation run for this summer to raise money for the Home of the Sparrow and to cover our Chapter costs. It was proposed that we meet at a restaurant or forest preserve, ride to a fun turn-around point with activities and/or food, and finally end up at a bowling alley to enjoy beverages and/or more food, games, raffles and etc. We’d like to have the event coordinated and ready to execute by late Spring, so if you have any ideas for a fun destination, turn-around point, meeting place or fund-raising activities, etc., please bring them to the next meeting!

Upcoming Rides

Northwind Riders'
Starved Rock Ride

April 21
As everyone knows, April 21 is the third Saturday of the month, our regularly scheduled meeting day. On this particular day, however, the Northwind Riders have planned a ride to Starved Rock. This ride would be a good opportunity for us to get to know our fellow Illinois WOW chapter members, so we would like to join them. David Thiessen suggested that we meet early, say around 8:00 a.m., and then begin our pleasant ride up to Starved Rock, where we should be able to join the Northwind Riders at the Starved Rock Lodge for lunch. Stay tuned for more information and meeting time changes!

Branson Motorcycle
Ride & Rally

May 17-20
It's about a 600-mile ride. We can take the speedy highways or we can take a slower, more scenic route. If anyone is interested, let us know! More details to come...

Eye of Illinois Campout
June 8, 9, 10
Lynda would like to get an idea of how many of us are interested in going to the Eye of Illinois a camp-out which will be held at the Mr. Lincoln campground in Springfield. Motels are available nearby for those of us who "don't do camping." Please let Lynda know if you plan to attend. More details to come...

Ride Attendance
It was suggested that those interested in participating in a ride would sign up for it at the previous month's meeting (or call the ride coordinator) so that on the day of the ride, if all aren't present or accounted for, only those who were interested in attending would be phoned. Of course, the ideal way to handle changes in plans would be to call the ride coordinator and let them know you changed your mind.

We still need a few volunteers to organize both the August and September after-meeting rides. Any volunteers, Monica and Carrie? How about it Sue and Maxine? :)

Illinois
Red Hawk Riders' Business

Donations
Please be sure to give your January RHR donation to Martha Alexander. The $10.00 donations are accepted twice a year; once in June, once in January. (Annual WOW dues have been raised to $25.00 per year.)

Elections
Officer's responsibilities will be made available for your perusal within the next couple months. Anyone interested in becoming an Illinois Red Hawk Riders Director or Treasurer should submit their request to Lynda DiGregor. We will be holding elections in July 2001. Elections will be held on an annual basis in accordance with the Women On Wheels® rules.

Been There, Done That…

The Annual Motorcycle Show
On Saturday, February 10th, some of us (Lynda, Ralph & Dominic, Maxine & Dave, Jim & son Philip, Lynn & Cary, Marge, Maureen, Sue, and Suzanne) met the Northwind Riders in the Expoteria of the Donald E. Stephens Convention Center in Rosemont at 8:30 a.m. for breakfast before the motorcycle show, as planned.

There was plenty of coffee, doughnuts, eggs, refills on coffee, french toast, hash browns, and did I mention coffee? After visiting for a while, we purchased tickets at a discounted price and headed into the show.

Marge & Friends

Once inside the motorcycle show, the RHR group split up and went their separate ways. Some of us went directly to the WOW booth to drop off our Illinois Red Hawk Riders flyer where we met Brenda Kooiman, the Director of the Northwind Riders as well as several other fellow WOW ladies. Anyway, they were all very friendly and helpful, and we sure do appreciate them handing out our flyers for us! By the way, we have their 2001 schedule and have been invited to attend their events if we'd like (copies of the schedule to be distributed at the next RHR meeting in March).

Suzanne trying on helmets

After WOW business had been taken care of, we took a walk around to look at all the fun toys. Lynda bought a subscription to Biker Ally, a new women's motorcycling magazine, and renewed her AMA membership. Ralph drooled over this year's biggest cruiser. Among other less expensive items, Suzanne bought a heated jacket liner to help keep warm during the cold, winter riding months. Lynda and Ralph's son, Dominic, displayed his awesome hunting-and-gathering skills by finding all the coolest freebies and leading us to the booths that gave them away. Good job, Dominic! :) As far as I know, no one purchased a new motorcycle. Oh well, maybe next year.

Lynda & Suzanne relaxing with some tasty beverages
at the end of a long day at the Motorcycle Show.

The HOG Heart Dance
At 7:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 10, 2001, the McHenry HOG Chapter held their annual Heart Dance to benefit the American Heart Association. According to Sue McDonald, the dance was quite a success with an estimated 550 folks in attendance.
