A Chapter of Women On Wheels®

Last Month's Meeting

June 16, 2001
Many regularly attending members as well as a few newcomers were present at last months meeting. In attendance were: Debi Horner & Jim, Susan Geis, Valerie Money, Suzanne Palm, Nora Quinn, Maureen Shreeves, Maxine Smith, Susan Snyder & Art, Margaret Thiessen & David, and Shelle Young & Dwayne. What a great bunch of folks we've accumulated!

Red Hawk Riders'
2-Day Ride to Galena, IL

July 14 & 15
Here’s the plan: Meet at 8:00 a.m. at the McDonald's on the corner of Rts. 176 & 14, all gassed up and ready to go. We’ll take a scenic route on our way to Chestnut Mountain where we will enjoy a nice, leisurely lunch.

Next, we can check out the Alpine sled for kicks and then take Blackjack Road to Galena. Once in Galena, we can stroll the streets, visit the shoppes, or take in the historic sites for an hour or two before stopping for dinner. We will overnight at the Dubuque Super 8.

We’ll start the next morning with breakfast, then head towards home via the scenic Stagecoach Trail, stopping in Rockford for lunch. A block of eight (non-smoking) rooms has been reserved for the night of July 14 at the Dubuque Super 8 motel at 2730 Dodge St. (about 12 miles west of Galena) at a group rate of about $60/double occupancy. If you’re interested in one of these rooms, call the motel directly at (319) 582-8898. Any rooms not reserved by July 1 will be released. You may cancel your reservation by 4:00 p.m. on the day of arrival.

Upcoming Rides

After-Meeting-Ride
July 18
Immediately following our regularly scheduled monthly meeting, we'll take a ride to be organized by Maureen and Lynn. Destination TBA at the meeting.
Hey, just show up--it'll be fun!

WOW 8th Annual Quad-State
Camp-out in Ontario, WI

August 3 - 5
The Quad-State Camp-out will be at the Stray Cat Cycle Campground on Highway 33, just outside of Wildcat Mountain State Park in Ontario, Wisconsin. Cost: $15.00 per person includes: 2 nights primitive camping, Saturday night cook-out, free coffee, great roads, scenery, friends, and fun.

Ontario is just 40 miles southeast of LaCrosse--a little over 200 miles or 4.5 hours from Crystal Lake, Illinois. Some of us will be leaving Friday evening after work, some of us will be leaving early Saturday morning.

Because the Sturgis crowd will be cruising through the area at the same time, Lynda has already reserved a block of 10 rooms (eight non-smoking/two smoking) for the night of August 4 at the Super 8 in Sparta (about 17 miles from the rally).

Our group rate is about $60/double occupancy. If you're interested in one of these rooms, be sure to call the Sparta Super 8 at (608) 269-8489. Any rooms not reserved by July 22 will be released. You may cancel your reservation by 4:00 p.m. on the day of arrival.

"Been There, Done That"

After-Meeting-Ride
Union, IL

June 16
Immediately following our regularly scheduled monthly meeting, we took a nice, leisurely ride along the winding country roads and through the rolling farmlands of Harmony and Union, Illinois.

We left the Colonial Cafe around 10am, as scheduled, and headed southwest. We travelled through Huntley and continued on through Harmony and up to Union, where we stopped at the Old West Steakhouse and Buffet for some tasty vittles. (We had stopped at the Union Train Museum first, but decided we were all too hungry to wait for lunch!)

After lunch, we all parted ways, some going on to family functions, others returning home to other obligations, etc. (Mike & I going to the Train Museum). Regardless of where we went after lunch, all of us enjoyed the warm weather, the scenery, and the ride.

I would just like to say "thank you so much" to Mike for all his help in mapping out this ride and for sharing his excellent navigational skills and sense of direction with me. He made this after-meeting-ride an enjoyable experience for everyone.
