Support the Central Asia
Institute (CAI) and
its efforts to build schools, mostly for girls, in some of Pakistan’s most
remote areas.
The Executive Director of the CAI is
Greg Mortenson.
A mountain climber by passion, Mortenson
attempted to scale K2, the World’s second tallest peak in northern
Pakistan. He was unsuccessful in
reaching the summit and during his descent he became separated from his climbing
party and ended up in a remote village called Korphe
in the foot of the Himalaya Mountains.
Upon seeing the poor conditions of the village and how its children did
not have regular classroom education, Mortenson pledged to return
one day and build a school.
Within a few years Mortenson fulfilled his pledge and built the school for the
villagers as he had promised. Greg Mortenson went on to become Director of the Central Asia
Institute and has since built more schools in Pakistan and also Afghanistan.
Greg Mortenson’s
story has been chronicled in a book he co-authored with David Oliver Relin. The book, a
New York Times Best-Seller, is titled Three
Cups of Tea, One Man's Mission to Promote Peace...One School at a Time. The story is remarkable and truly uplifting.
