The Band
Marilyn Manson formed in 1989 in Ft Lauderdale, Florida under the name of Marilyn Manson and the Spooky Kids. The original members were Marilyn Manson on Vocals, Daisy Berkowitz on Guitar, Zsa Zsa Speck on keyboards and Olivia Newton Bundy on Bass ( and a Drum machine! ) but Zsa Zsa Speck and Olivia Newton Bundy were only in the band for a short amount of time. They were soon replaced by current member Madonna Wayne Gacy on keys and Gidget Gein on Bass. All of the members of the band were named by combining the first name of a female icon(good) and the surname of a serial killer(evil).
In 1990 the drum machine was thrown out and in came drummer Sara Lee Lucas and from 1991 the band performed in clubs around Florida where their music was getting noticed more and more. They also self-released several cassettes(see discography)
In 1992 the band reduced it's name to just Marilyn Manson and were nominated for 2 south Florida slammies. Then in 1993, frontman of Nine Inch Nails, Trent Reznor offered the band a contract on his record label ( Nothing Records ) and had them as the opening band on the NIN tour. At the end of the year Gidget gein was replaced by Twiggy Ramirez because his heroin addiction was getting in the way of this commitment to the band. Also the band won 2 slammies for 'band of the year' and 'song of the year(Dope Hat)'.
In July of 1994 they released their first album -Portrait of an American family-, and in 1995 Sara Lee Lucas was replaced by their current drummer Ginger Fish. Also Daisy Berkowitz quit due to conflicts between him and Manson. He was replaced by guitarist Zim Zum. At the end of the year the EP -Smells like Children- was released and eventually went platinum.
In September the band was nominated for a MTV music video award and won another South Florida slammie for 'Band of The Year'.Then in October 1996 the bands 2nd Album -Antichrist Superstar- was released, this contained the infamous single 'The Beautiful People'. This was to be the album that got Marilyn Manson the most attention,both negative and positive.
In 1997 the EP -Remix and Repent- was released and the band appeared on the soundtracks for 'Lost Highway' and 'Private Parts'. Then in 1998 Marilyn Manson published his autobiography -The long Hard Road Out Of hell-(the real place to look if your seriously looking for info. on Manson and the band!) and Zim Zum was replaced on guitars by John 5. Also the video -Dead To The World- was released which shows parts of the antichrist superstar tour and all the controversial events surrounding it.
Later in the year, the bands 3rd album -Mechanical Animals- was released which topped the American billboard 200 albums for a week. They were also nominated for a MTV European music video award for 'Best Rock Video' and won 2 billboard video music awards for 'Best clip' and 'Maximum vision award'.
In 1999 the live Album -Last Tour On Earth- and the video -God is in the TV- were released. The video for the single -The Dope Show- was nominated for a MTV music video award and the band was nominated for a MTV European music award for 'best rock artist'.
In 2000 the bands 4th album was released -Holywood(In the Shadow of the Valley of Death)- and the band embarked on their 'Guns,God and Government' tour. Then in 2001 the band was nominated for a Grammy award for 'best metal performance'.
