LATEST NEWS - by Matt Singh and Andrew Evans

Hi Globe subscribers, here's this weeks news…

World Wrestling Federation

It was confirmed on Saturday that Diamond Dallas Page had signed with WWFE, and he is now a definite for the new WCW. On a related note, Booker T is very close to signing with the company.

At the start of the week there were rumours that Bret Hart had signed a contract with WWFE, however, those rumours were quickly squashed by the WWF and Hart himself some hours later. It is extremely unlikely that Bret Hart will ever appear in the WWF or WCW ever again.

Chyna is scheduled to do another Playboy shoot in the fall.

Paul Heyman has apparently been pushing for longer main events on WWF TV.

Jerry Lawler is only willing to return to the company on the basis that his wife Stacey 'The Kat' Carter is also rehired. He met with the WWF two Friday's back, and negotiations went nowhere as the WWF told Lawler that they were not willing to re-hire Kat. Other rumours say that this is a complete work and that Lawler will show up in the new WCW. Only time will tell...

Former ECW talent Chilly Willy is expected to have a dark match with the company in the near future.

The main event of King of the Ring is still officially unannounced, although there are strong rumours it will be a three way for the WWF Title, with Austin defending against Chris Jericho and Chris Benoit. Perhaps tonight's Raw taping will set up the main event.

The Rock will not be at any Raw tapings in the near future despite reports to the contrary.

Triple H is expected back in around 4-5 months and Rikishi is also about 4 months away from a return. K-Kwik and Scotty 2 Hotty are ready to return to action, although there is no word on when they will return. Gangrel is still under a WWFE contract despite the fact he hasn't been used in months, the same goes for Mark Henry who is still in Ohio Valley Wrestling (OVW).

World Championship Wrestling

It appears as though the WCW invasion of the WWF will be dragged out with single WCW performers doing run-ins as opposed to a whole host of WCW wrestlers appearing at once.

There is still no word on when the television deal with TNN will be finalised, although it should be soon due to the invasion angle already being underway.

Diamond Dallas Page should show up on WWF TV soon now that he has signed.

Elsewhere

It has been rumoured that Vampiro is going to have some meetings with WWF management about the possibility of signing for the group. If he does sign, and remember he hasn't yet, then he will more than likely work for WCW.

WrestleXpress have invited World Snooker Champion, Ronnie O' Sullivan, and former World Darts Champion, Eric Bristow, among others to their 20th October 2001 event in Coventry. WrestleXpress have also announced this week that Madusa and Toryumon's Tokyo Magnum will be appearing at the show. It is still unknown whether Rob Van Dam will be appearing for his match against Steve Corino. The situation should become clearer once he has signed with the WWFE, which should be very soon.

And lastly, for those of you in Europe with a analogue satellite system still set up, Astra transponder 21, otherwise known as the German sports channel DSF, are now airing old episodes of WCW Nitro on Saturday nights. Last Saturday nights broadcast was originally aired on 17th February 1997, 6 days before Superbrawl 1997. Matches included Super Calo v Rey Mysterio Jr., Robbie Brookside v Dean Malenko, a rather larger looking Hugh Morrus v Steve McMichael (with Debra) and a Chris Jericho v Jeff Jarrett main event. The angle where the Outsiders flipped the Steiner Brothers car off the road was also played. Great stuff! Only downside of the show is...the commentary is all in German.

RUDO RAMBLINGS - by Martin Walton

Pretty busy week down in Mexico, with plenty of EMLL news plus the latest on a tour of Mexico featuring workers from Jersey based Combat Zone Wrestling!

In EMLL news, Vampiro finally made his EMLL return this past Friday, taking part in angle where he sat in the front row of a show at the Arena Mexico and made the save by sending Zumbido and The Boriquas packing. Ricky Marvin was set to head over to Toryumon in Japan this week, however he injured himself last Wednesday when he messed up on a plancha and smacked his head on the concrete floor. No word on whether he’s actually fit enough to head over to Japan. Rayo De Jalisco Jr. will be out for three weeks after suffering some sort of neck injury early this week.

In AAA news, I swear that nothing at all has happened in AAA this week. The only news tidbits I could find is that the main event of this week’s AAA show in Phoenix is Heavy Metal vs. Electro Shock. And on June 10th at Arena Solidaridad in Monterrey, Hector Garza and Jerry Estrada will do battle one-on-one for the Mexican National Lightweight Title. In the semi-main, La Parka Jr., Perro Aguayo Jr. and Heavy Metal meet Electro Shock, The Panther and Headhunter I.

Elsewhere, The XLAW will be promoting a tour in June. The first show will be on June 10th in Tulancingo:

MAIN EVENT: John Zandig vs. Super Crazy - CZW Title Match

SEMI-FINAL: Nicho El Millonario vs. Wifebeater

El Depredador vs. Mosco De La Merced vs. El Potro - Triangle Ladder Match

Salsero vs. El Hijo Del Diablo - Extreme Match

Kung Fu Jr. and Kato Kung Lee Jr. vs. Nozawa and Mazada

Toru Owashi and Takamishi Iwasa vs. Masato Yoshino and Milano Collection A.T.

Locals match with students from the Tulancingo wrestling school where Super Crazy and his brother Rey Cuervo teach.

There will be more cards with the CZW crew and Sabu to come in later June. Sabu would have joined the tour earlier but he has a series of bookings in Northern California for APW. It’s unlikely that the tour will be a success considering nobody in Mexico knows who the hell Zandig and co is.

THE PURORESU RUNDOWN - by Andrew Evans

Quite a few notes this week, including details of the Triple Crown changing hands:

AJPW's 8th June Nippon Budokan rally saw Keiji Mutoh defeat Gen'ichiro Tenryu for the Triple Crown in 23 minutes 24 seconds after hitting a Moonsault. After the match, Mutoh claimed that he would re-write history of the Triple Crown, and live up to the same name of Baba, Tsuruta, Tenryu, and Hansen. It is likely that Mutoh will drop the Triple Crown to Toshiaki Kawada on 14th July at another AJPW show at Nippon Budokan.

All Japan Pro Wrestling announced the line-up of gaikokujin (foreigners) booked for their Summer Action 2001 Series tour. The foreigners include Taiyo Kea, Steve Williams, Mike Barton, Johnny Smith, Jim Steele, George Hines, and two new guys - Shawn "Hot Stuff" Hernandez & Kasey Geyer, who will be working as a tag team unit. The tour will begin on 30th June and end on 14th July.

Toshiaki Kawada returned to the ring on 7th June at an AJPW show at Takasaki City Gym in a 6-man tag match pitting him, Masa Fuchi and Shigeo Okumura against Taiyo Kea, Jinsei Shinzaki and Johnny Smith. Kea, Shinzaki and Smith won the match in just under 22 minutes after Smith pinned Okumura.

Antonio Inoki announced in Japan that New Japan would officially open its first American dojo (wrestling school) in Los Angeles within the first 10 days, and that they would bring in wrestling coaches of different martial arts (wrestling, judo, etc.) to the school to teach different skills to potential students.

IWGP Champion Kazuyuki Fujita's "second" for his title match against Yuji Nagata at NJ's 6th June, Nippon Budokan show was Kengo Watanabe (Pancrase). It had appeared that the main event of NJ's 20th July, Sapporo Dome show was to be Fujita vs. Mark Coleman, but there is currently an alternative idea in the Inoki camp to have Yuji Nagata face Mark Coleman for the PRIDE GP belt and to have Kazuyuki Fujita defend his IWGP World Title against Gary Goodridge at the show. Other angles set-up for the show include potential matches of: Masa Fuchi and a Mystery partner vs. Jushin Liger and El Samurai for the IWGP Jr. Tag Titles (these belts have been getting a push lately with Super Delfin & Takehiro Murahama also demanding a shot), and Masahito Kakihara throwing his name into the mix of facing Minoru Tanaka for the IWGP Jr. Title belt (Masayuki Naruse, ex-RINGS, already threw his hat into the mix).

New Japan made a stunning announcement in that they have not booked any PPV slots for their annual G-1 tournament, which happens in August. This is a touchy situation right now, because the big angle that New Japan is running with NOAH wrestler Jun Akiyama is that he will have to work the G-1 tournament in August. New Japan is partly owned and telecasted on TV-Asahi, the opposing network to the network that NOAH wrestlers have contracts with, Nippon TV (N-TV). In essence, TV-Asahi will have to pay a pretty penny to air Akiyama on free-TV if they want Nippon TV to allow Akiyama to appear on an opposing network. Interesting compromise could involve all of the Akiyama G-1 matches being shown on N-TV and the rest of the G-1 tournament being aired on TV-Asahi.

Pro Wrestling NOAH officials announced details of their GHC Jr. Heavyweight tournament to declare the first ever Jr. Heavyweight champion of the NOAH promotion. 12 wrestlers will be a part of the tournament and they are: Tsuyoshi Kikuchi, Satoru Asako, Yoshinobu Kanemaru, Makoto Hashi, Naomichi Marufuji, Kenta Kobayashi, Masaji Aoyagi, BJ Whitmer, Matt Murphy (from the Race Academy), Jardi Frantz (APW/Hayward, California), Juventud Guerrera and Pathfinder. The tournament started on 9th June, and the final will take place on June 24th at Nagoya Aiichi Prefectural Gym (9,500 seats).

The matches in the tournament are (winners so far in caps and bold):

6/9 - Differ Ariake - PATHFINDER v Kenta Kobayashi.

6/10 - Yamanashi (Tsuruta Memorial) - TSUYOSHI KIKUCHI vs. Masaji Aoyagi.

6/12 - Nagano Exercise Park Gym - Jardi Frantz vs. Makoto Hashi.

6/15 - Niigata City Gym - Matt Murphy vs. Satoru Asako.

6/16 - Miyagi Prefectural Sports Center - Yoshinobu Kanemaru vs. Pathfinder.

6/17 - Tochigi, Oyama American Village - Naomichi Marufuji vs. Frantz/Hashi winner.

6/20 - Tokyo, Korakuen Hall - Juventud Guerrera vs. Murphy/Asako winner.

6/24 - Nagoya Aiichi Prefectural Gym - GHC Jr. Heavyweight Tournament Final.

THE DANGER ZONE - by Martin Walton

BEST OF THE SUPER JUNIOR TOURNAMENT 2001

New Japan’s annual Best of the Super Juniors Tournament is without doubt the world’s top junior heavyweight tournament. The tourney attracts some of the best junior heavyweights from other promotions in Mexico and America who in turn supplement New Japan’s existing Junior Heavyweight division. New Japan’s current Junior Heavyweight division as of late has been in the doldrums. Top draws Jushin Liger and Shinjiro Ohtani have been promoted to the heavyweight division, which has forced old hands like Koji Kanemoto and El Samurai along with former BattlArts standout Minoru Tanaka to carry the load. Fortunately, Jushin Liger returned to his old stomping ground for this years tournament, and outsiders such as Chris Candido, Michinoku Pro’s Gran Naniwa and EMLL’s Shocker were drafted in. The tournament originally breaks off into two groups with the winners of each group facing each other in the final. This years brackets looked like this:

BLOCK A

Chris Candido

El Samurai

Gran Naniwa

Jushin Liger

Silver King

Wataru Inoue

BLOCK B

Akira Nogami

Dr. Wagner Jr.

Katsuyori Shibata

Minoru Tanaka

Shinya Makabe

Shocker

GROUP STAGE ANALYSIS

The tournament kicked off on May 18th at the Korakuen Hall in Tokyo with Silver King downing New Japan newcomer Chris Candido, while Jushin Liger predictably defeated Wataru Inoue in Block A. Meanwhile in Block B, Shocker caused the first upset of the tourney by dropping Dr. Wagner Jr. and IWGP Jr. Heavyweight Champion Minoru Tanaka bested Shinya Makabe.

The next night in Saitama, Silver King streaked off to a early lead in Block A by dropping Gran Naniwa to move up to 4 pts. Elsewhere in Block A, El Samurai got off the mark by downing Wataru Inoue. In the only Block B match of the night, Shocker squashed Shinya Makabe to take the lead in Block B.

The tour continued the next night in Furukawa before a small crowd of 1,800. In Block A, Silver King shot up to 6 points by dropping the hapless Wataru Inoue, while Jushin Liger moved onto 4 pts by beating the luckless Chris Candido. Meanwhile in Block B, Dr. Wagner got off the mark by squashing youngster Katsuyori Shibata, and veteran Akira Nogami also got off the mark by besting the early leader, Shocker.

Following a four-day break, the tour rolled into Fukushima. Things got very interesting in Block A with El Samurai moving onto 4 pts after defeating Chris Candido, while Jushin Liger moved level with leader Silver King by downing Gran Naniwa. Similarly, Block B got very interesting with Minoru Tanaka and Dr. Wagner Jr. both moving onto 4 points by defeating Katsuyori Shibata and Akira Nogami respectively.

The tables looked like this at the halfway stage:

BLOCK A

Jushin Liger - 6 pts 3 Matches

Silver King - 6 pts 3 Matches

El Samurai - 4 pts 2 Matches

Chris Candido - 0 pts 3 Matches

Gran Naniwa - 0 pts 2 Matches

Wataru Inoue - 0 pts 3 Matches

BLOCK B

Dr. Wagner Jr. - 4 pts 3 Matches

Minoru Tanaka - 4 pts 2 Matches

Shocker - 4 pts 3 Matches

Akira Nogami - 2 pts 2 Matches

Shinya Makabe - 0 pts 2 Matches

Katsuyori Shibata - 0 pts 2 Matches

The tour continued the next day in Kanagawa before of a crowd of 2,700. Gran Naniwa finally got off the mark in Block A by dropping Wataru Inoue, and El Samurai took over at the top of Block A following a victory over Silver King. Block B results went to form as Akira Nogami went up to 4 pts by defeating Katsuyori Shibata, while Dr. Wagner Jr. bested Shinya Makabe to take the lead in Block B.

The next night in Shizuoka, tournament favorite Jushin Liger downed co-leader El Samurai to take the lead in Block A, and Chris Candido eventually got off the mark by dropping Gran Naniwa. Meanwhile, Shinya Makabe eventually got off the mark in Block B with a victory over Katsuyori Shibata. Minoru Tanaka eventually took over control of Block B by downing co-leader Shocker.

The next night in Sendai before a crowd of 4,000 saw El Samurai’s hopes of advancing dashed, as he crashed to Gran Naniwa. Things got very interesting in Block B as Akira Nogami upset Minoru Tanaka to throw the group wide open. Shocker capitalized by downing Katsuyori Shibata to make it a four way tie between Tanaka, Nogami, Wagner and Shocker for the lead.

The group stages finally finished up on June 1st in Kagawa. Jushin Liger managed to wrap up Block A with a victory over Block rival Silver King, while Chris Candido moved up to a respectable 4 pts by downing Wataru Inoue. Meanwhile in Block B, Akira Nogami’s hopes were dashed as he fell to Shinya Makabe; Minoru Tanaka finally secured Block B as expected after downing Dr. Wagner Jr.

The final tables looked like this:

BLOCK A

Jushin Liger - 10 Pts 5 Matches

El Samurai - 6 Pts 5 Matches

Silver King - 6 Pts 5 Matches

Chris Candido - 4 Pts 5 Matches

Gran Naniwa - 4 Pts 5 Matches

Wataru Inoue - 0 Pts 5 Matches

BLOCK B

Minoru Tanaka - 8 Pts 5 Matches

Akira Nogami - 6 Pts 5 Matches

Dr. Wagner Jr. - 6 Pts 5 Matches

Shocker - 6 Pts 5 Matches

Shinya Makabe - 4 Pts 5 Matches

Katsuyori Shibata - 0 Pts 5 Matches

THE FINAL

June 4: Osaka Prefectural Gym, 5,700 paid attendance.

Jushin Liger defeated Minoru Tanaka in 26 minutes with an avalanche style brain-buster.

ANALYSIS

New Japan for once booked this tournament almost perfectly. Going into the tournament it seemed the obvious thing to do was to let Jushin Liger win and in turn set up a match between Liger and Tanaka for the IWGP Jr. Heavyweight Title for the future (maybe at the Sapporo Dome Show on 7/20), and New Japan to their credit did exactly this. Elsewhere, Chris Candido did respectably and must have impressed officials due to his wins in the final stages of the tournament. New Japan newcomer Silver King had an excellent tournament by pushing eventual winner Jushin Liger all the way in Block A and Dr. Wagner Jr. continues to make steady progress in the division as evident by his joint second place finish in Block B.

PEARLS OF WISDOM - by Andrew Evans

THE UK WRESTLING SCENE - BACK ON TRACK?

The peak of televised British wrestling drew about 10 million people to watch on Saturday afternoons, way back in the 70s and 80s. But sadly, the UK wrestling scene died out, and the mainstream TV coverage was lost. To be honest, there was a complete lack of interest. Big Daddy and Giant Haystacks were gone, and soon after, starting in 1989, Vince McMahon's WWF began their rule of TV wrestling in the UK on the Sky channels. Or at least, that's the short story to it.

10 years on, it was 1999. What had changed? Well, the UK wrestling scene was as dead as ever, with a few Indy cards here and there, but nothing even close to special had happened or was planned to happen. The WWF and WCW were both doing well, on Sky Sports and TNT respectively, drawing a good number of viewers each week. They were the dominant figures, and no one could touch them. The WWF's ratings were huge in 1999, and are the reason for a lot of current UK wrestling fans.

In those 10 years, nothing happened to cause any kind of real excitement for fans living in the UK. The WWF's visits to Britain are currently at their highest rate, with just two per year! But now, UK fans are once again talking about the scene in their homeland. Why? There is a new promotion around. WrestleXpress. You may ask: Who are they? Well, no one seems to know all that much about them...

In just a few months, WrestleXpress have given UK fans something to talk about by announcing their first card set for 20th October 2001 in Coventry, with some huge names booked. Matches include Rob Van Dam v Steve Corino and Juventud Guerrera v Psicosis, with Vampiro, Madusa, Eric Bischoff and Scott Hall also looking set to appear, along with the top talent from the UK promotions, the EWW, NWA-Hammerlock and the FWA. On top of all of this, the group went on to announce a second card scheduled for 2nd March 2002 at the London Arena, named "WrestleXpress Revenge". Surely, this is a huge risk, isn't it? The London Arena was run by WCW last year for a Nitro taping. How can this new company who have appeared from nowhere think they can sell out 10,000 - 15,000 seats?!

Firstly, WrestleXpress are in serious negotiations to bring the UK 5 PPV's a year, most likely through the U>Direct channels seen on Sky Digital. They will also be creating a weekly TV show for the "European and Asian TV markets" beginning in January 2002, which will last an hour, featuring the best matches from their live events. With the current demand for wrestling in the UK, there are many channels who will want to pick this kind of show up, for example, Bravo, Channel 5 or Eurosport.

There is a gap in the market for UK wrestling. WrestleXpress have spotted it and are going all out on making their venture a success. WCW packed the London Arena last year, and at the time their TV coverage was fairly limited, and their advertising for the show wasn't exactly huge. WrestleXpress can do exactly the same. With a TV show, they have the opportunity to advertise their bigger events as much as they like, and UK fans will scramble to get tickets for the shows after seeing some of their favourite wrestlers in action week after week, just the same as WCW. I know, because I'll be one of them. I'm already planning my trip to WrestleXpress Revenge. UK fans have been starved of live shows for years, and getting tickets to live WWF shows has been close to impossible, especially just recently. In fact, there was a mess up in the ticket sale and distribution for the WWF Insurrextion 2001 event. 1wrestling.com reported that approximately 2,000 angry, ticket-less fans nearly started a riot outside the Earls Court Box Office!

It's a great time for a UK based wrestling promotion to take the scene by storm and capitalise on what the fans really want, which is national live wrestling on a regular basis. For many, it would be a dream come true. With the demise of WCW (as it was) and ECW, many well known and talented wrestlers are unsigned and working Indy dates, and will be more than happy to work for a company seen worldwide like WrestleXpress. The right mix is there; the former WCW stars are best at drawing and the former ECW stars are mostly better on the in-ring wrestling aspect. At the same time, the group can familiarise fans with the "new" guys...the British guys. Another reason for the chance of a big boost in the UK wrestling scene at the moment is a big increase in quality home grown talent. People like Jodie Fleisch, Johnny Storm, Alex Shane and Doug Williams, to name just a few, will eventually be the performers who will appeal the most to British fans, and will also be able to produce interesting confrontations with the established stars from across the Atlantic in the meantime.

The future looks bright for the UK wrestling scene, with WrestleXpress being the main focus as things stand right now, as long as they can get decent TV coverage. I will be looking forward to seeing how UK wrestling develops over the next couple of years, and I wish WrestleXpress and every other UK based promotion every success in what they set out to achieve. With nationwide coverage, and regular live events, who is to say that WrestleXpress won't be the leader for UK fans in five years from now?
