LATEST NEWS - by Matt Singh and Andrew Evans

Hi Globe subscribers, here's this weeks news…

World Wrestling Federation

In a news story that only broke today, Buff Bagwell has parted ways with WWFE. A message posted on www.wwf.com says the following: "World Wrestling Federation Entertainment, Inc. Senior Vice President for Talent Relations Jim Ross met with Marcus "Buff" Bagwell on Monday, and the two men mutually agreed to end Bagwell's contractual obligations." Before his release, Bagwell gained a lot of heat from WWF management and wrestlers alike. He first started a fight two weeks ago at a WWF training center with Shane Helms when Bagwell apparently stated to Helms that he would never be a big star (insert own joke here) and slapped Helms across the face. The fracas was soon broken up. In addition to this, Bagwell's mother had been complaining to WWF management about her son's so called grueling travel schedule, which only gained Bagwell even more heat. No, seriously.

Wade Keller of www.prowrestlingtorch.com has reported the following tonight: "WWFE's creative staff continue to rethink many of their plans each week, in part due to the poor showing of many WCW performers, in part due to an unexpected overwhelming backlash by WWF crowds against the WCW brand, and in part due to their normal pattern of short-term planning. Nothing that had been planned previously is 100 percent going to happen, including giving Raw to WCW. The latest rumor is that the ECW brand may be re-launched tonight in part to test out the crowd reaction to toward that brand. While crowds all over the country, even in non-ECW markets, chant "ECW" often, there has never been a WCW chant at a WWF event." With Heyman, Dreamer, Storm, Credible, Tajiri, Awesome, Tazz, Lynn, RVD, Rhyno etc either contracted to WWFE, or close to it, a full ECW revival would be far simpler than the WCW vs. WWF angle. ECW seems to be 100 times more over than WCW with the WWF fans, and the former ECW talent are far more recognised than they were around 4-5 years ago when the "ECW invades WWF" angle went down, so a mass defection could actually work well. Still, a huge hole would be left with the WCW talent. What the WWFE do from here is anyone's guess, but I for one am fully behind the return of ECW, under the current situation.

Last weeks Raw drew a 4.6 rating, with the number growing throughout the show, peaking during the WCW main event of Booker T v Buff Bagwell for the WCW World Heavyweight Title. However, it was decidedly different live at the show, with droves of the crowd leaving, during the match.

Tiger Ali Singh, D'Lo Brown and Chaz are all down in WWF affiliate IWA in Puerto Rico. They've been there for quite some time now, and no one knows when any of them will return to WWF TV.

The Light Heavyweight division is said to be getting a good push in the coming month, and could really succeed with workers like Jerry Lynn and Yoshihiro Tajiri as new additions to the roster. Lynn is also said to have dropped the Light Heavyweight title a month back to Jeff Hardy as management felt he needs to work on his persona side of his gimmick to get a proper push.

'Tough Enough' is set to air in the UK in August on MTV.

Matt 'Spike Dudley' Hyson suffered a hairline fracture of his fibula at last weeks Smackdown taping and will be out for around 2-3 weeks.

Joey Styles' has turned down a WWFE contract, stating he would have to take a substantial pay cut from what he is doing at the moment.

The team of Trish Stratus and Lita will apparently face Torrie Wilson and Stacey Kiebler in a Bra and Panties match at the Invasion PPV on 22nd July, although this has not been confirmed. In addition to that, Kidman vs. X-Pac is also rumoured for the event. In fact, the only match officially announced is Mike Awesome vs. Rhyno for the WWF Hardcore Title. Another match, rumoured to be the main event, is currently only known as the "Inaugural Brawl", which should turn out to be a WWF vs. WCW tag team match. Although the names and type of match have yet to be announced, a 10-man tag is very likely.

AJ Styles will have a dark match trial at tonight's Raw taping.

World Championship Wrestling

Suspected names for future PPV's are WCW Pride, WCW New Blood, WCW Sin, WCW Havoc, WCW Greed, WCW Envy, WCW Starrcade and WCW Great American Bash. The first PPV under WWFE is expected in October.

Elsewhere

Hulk Hogan has been playing down reports that he will start his own wrestling promotion. However, this is Hogan we're talking about, and never take his word for the truth until anything actually happens.

WrestleXpress has announced the following dates and venues for its up-coming cards:

2nd March 2002 - London Arena, London.

1st June 2002 - Glasgow, Scotland (arena yet to be determined).

August 2002 - Odyssey Arena, Belfast, Northern Ireland.

10th November 2002 - Manchester Evening News Arena, Manchester.

A big WrestleXpress angle at their first show looks set to be "Who is in charge?". That question is asked on the home page of their web site, www.wrestlexpress.com, and features pictures of Eric Bischoff, Jimmy Hart, Sonny Onoo and the company's Managing Director, Ryan Aaron Hewson. For those wondering who Hewson is, he's better known around the Internet as "CoolRy". If the WrestleXpress Commissioner is also thrown into the mix as well (rumoured to be Ernest "The Cat" Miller), this could make for a good angle on the opening show, and maybe beyond...

The latest possibilities on where WrestleXpress' TV show will be broadcast, are ITV Sport and Channel 5.

RUDO RAMBLINGS - by Martin Walton

Plenty of news to report this week aside from the AAA situation that is covered elsewhere. We have news on a serious injury in EMLL, a successful tag title defense in EMLL and the cracking line-up for Tijuana last Friday night.

EMLL will be running a special House Show at Arena Coliseo on July 15 to honour Perro Aguayo (don’t ask me why).

The card looks like this:
MAIN EVENT: Mil Mascaras/Rayo De Jalisco Jr./La Parka vs. Los Hermanod Dinamita (Cien Caras/Mascara Ano 2000/Universo 2000).
SEMI-MAIN EVENT: Mr. Niebla/Lizmark Jr./El Hijo De Rayo De Jalisco Jr. vs. Fuerza Guerrera/Emilio Charles Jr./Black Warrior.

Mid carder and former ECW wrestler Mosco De La Merced suffered a serious neck injury on Friday night as he lost a hair vs. hair match to rising star Zumbido in Aguascalientes, Mosco is expected to be out for 3-4 months. Also on the card, Rey Bucanero and Ultimo Guerrero (excellent team) beat El Averno and Satanico to retain the CMLL Tag Team Titles.

EMLL is running a big house show in Puebla tonight, the line-up looks like this:

MAIN EVENT: Ultimo Guerrero and Rey Bucanero vs. El Averno and Satanico - CMLL Tag Team Titles Bout.
SEMI-MAIN EVENT: Asturiano vs. Loco Max.
TERCERA: Super Parka/Felino/Tony Rivera vs. Bobby Jack/Violencia/El Veneno.

Things have literally gone crazy in AAA this week. For details, check out this week’s edition of the Danger Zone. Despite it’s problems, AAA has the following Arenas booked for TV tapings:

July 13th in Piedras Negras.
July 15 at Arena Solidaridad in Monterrey.
August 3rd in Queretaro, August.
August 9 in Huamantla.
August 17 in Madero.

Elsewhere, last Friday’s line-up in Tijuana looked like this (no results yet but it looked a storming card):

MAIN EVENT: Konnan/Nicho El Millonario (Psicosis)/Blue Demon Jr./La Parka vs. Blue Panther/Pentagon/Dr. Wagner Jr./Chuck Palumbo.
SEMI-MAIN EVENT: Los Hermanos Dinamita vs. La Familia De Tijuana.
CUARTA: Solar I vs. Kiss - WWA Middleweight Title.
TERCERA: Tinieblas Jr./Super Parka/Mascara Sagrada vs. El Hijo Del Diablo/Rey Bucanero/Ultimo Guerrero.

And finally, in a recent interview, La Familia de Tijuana (Damien 666, Halloween and Rey Misterio Sr.) said they were thinking of retiring from wrestling in Tijuana due to the problems they are having with the local promoter El Caballon (this could be an angle).

THE PURORESU RUNDOWN - by Andrew Evans

Some interesting notes from this week in puroresu:

On New Japan's Sunday night show in Osaka, Manabu Nakanishi and Yuji Nagata defeated Masa Chono and Scott Hall in 14 minutes 3 seconds when Nakanishi used a spear on Chono for the upset win. Chono booked an injury angle where Nakanishi speared Chono on the right side of his stomach (Chono has an intestinal blockage and reportedly appendicitis) and Chono did a stretcher job to the locker room, where a special ring doctor analyzed Chono. Chono will take the next 11 days off and be back to face Keiji Mutoh on 20th July at the Sapporo Dome show. Chono will be visiting doctors today, and more news on his condition will be available next week.

There appears to be a big angle on the horizon that is bound to anger a lot of workers in New Japan. The angle, booked by Masa Chono, has Hiroyoshi Tenzan claiming that this year's G-1 tournament is "his last chance" to win it at all, hinting that he's going to get put over big time. Tenzan's a good worker, but the fact that he's buddies with Chono does not go over well with the rest of the New Japan workers. The full list of G-1 tournament matches can now be seen at www.puroresupower.com.

New Japan President Tatsumi Fujinami announced that he would have a "conference" with NOAH owner Mitsuharu Misawa at NOAH's 1st anniversary show on July 27th at Nippon Budokan in Tokyo. It's expected that Yuji Nagata & Jushin Liger will also show up as spectators.

The two main matches booked by Big Japan to headline their July 27th rally at Korakuen Hall in Tokyo are: John Zandig, Kintaro Kanemura and Abdullah Kobayashi vs. Wifebeater, Justice Pain and Madman Pondo, and Jun Kasai and Men's Teioh vs. Shadow WX and The Winger.

The two main matches booked by FMW to headline their big July 30th rally in Fukuoka at Hakata Star Lanes are: Hayabusa vs. Mammoth Sasaki in a Lumberjack Match for the WEW Singles Title, and Hisakatsu Ohya, Ricky Fuji and Flying Kid Ichihara vs. Kodo Fuyuki, Mr. Gannosuke and Kintaro Kanemura in a WEW 6-man Tag Titles match.

The proposal on the table right now for PRIDE on November 3rd at the Tokyo Dome is to have a "Triple Main Event" with Nobuhiko Takada vs. Naoya Ogawa, Kazushi Sakuraba vs. Vanderlei Silva and Mark Coleman vs. Kazuyuki Fujita.

Atsushi Onita is going to run for the House of Councilors in Japan (politics). His platform is based on educational reform (his love of children), society issues, symbiosis with nature, and volunteer activity. Onita has done many commercials on TV for charitable causes in the past, including AIDS awareness campaigns on TV in 1993.

Doctors yesterday told Masahito Kakihara that he suffered serious ligament damage in his right knee during a match on July 4th in Matsuyama. Kakihara immediately had to cancel all bookings, including the AJ Nippon Budokan rally on 14th July. The ligament damage is bad enough that he and Mitsuya Nagai will probably have to vacate the All-Asian Tag Title belts.

At Differ Ariake in Tokyo on Sunday night at a Toryumon show, Darkness Dragon, Yasushi Kanda and Susumu Mochizuki defeated Shiima Nobunaga, Judo Suwa and Yoshikazu Taru in 19 minutes, 3 seconds when Dragon used his "Darkness Buster" on Nobunaga to win the UWA 6-man Tag Titles.

THE DANGER ZONE - by Martin Walton

THE RISE AND FALL OF AAA

Mexico’s AAA promotion is in serious trouble. Almost 50% of the roster want to, or will be, leaving the promotion in the next few weeks, and it looks like they could be out of business by the end of the summer. However, before I talk about AAA’s current problems in more detail, let’s sidetrack a little bit and look at the history of AAA.

The story of AAA starts in the early 1990’s when the current AAA boss Antonio Pena was one of the bookers in EMLL, which at the time was by far the top promotion in Mexico. However, Pena wasn’t a happy camper, and he felt the anarchic style of EMLL was holding back the business in Mexico and he wanted the promotion to become more open to different styles of Lucha Libre. Pena was not alone in his thinking, many of the wrestlers (most notably rising star Konnan and veteran Perro Aguayo) had similar thoughts so Pena and company formed a clique in the promotion that campaigned for change. When it became obvious that change was not forthcoming, in May 1992, Pena branched out and formed his own promotion, namely AAA (Asistencia Asesoria y Administracion). In the process, Pena gradually raided EMLL for the likes of Konnan, El Hijo Del Santo, Perro Aguayo, Art Barr, Eddie Guerrero and Blue Panther. By 1993, Pena had formed the strongest roster in the world with Konnan protégés Rey Misterio Jr., Juventud Guerrera and Psicosis joining the established stars on the AAA roster.

As EMLL struggled to recover from the loss of it’s top stars, AAA become red-hot due to it’s progressive style (blood, chairs, tables and barbed wire became regular features), and its fantastic set of workers. AAA branched out into the American market by running shows in California, Texas, Chicago and New York and was generally regarded as the hottest promotion in the world. In the summer of 1993, business went into over-drive when Art Barr and Eddie Guerrero formed the legendary heel team known as Los Gringos Locos along with Konnan, and immediately declared war on El Hijo Del Santo and the Mexican population in general.

The feud blazed across Mexico and America in 1994 with AAA packing houses on a continual basis. Business reached it’s pinnacle on November 6 when in conjunction with WCW, AAA presented it’s first and last PPV, the tremendous "When World’s Collide" show at the LA Sports Arena. That night, Eddie and Art lost their hair to the Santo/Octagon tandem and Perro Aguayo overcame Konnan in the cage match main event.

If 93/94 were the growth years of AAA then 95/96 were the downward spiral years as it was all downhill for the promotion after "When World’s Collide". The first blow was struck when AAA’s top heel Art Barr passed away in his sleep at his home in Portland, Oregon on 24th November. The biggest blow however was when the Peso (Mexican currency) crashed, which in turn led to lower wages for the entire AAA roster. As a result, many top stars began to look for work outside of Mexico. Eddie Guerrero started to work part-time with New Japan and eventually left AAA for a better deal with ECW, Konnan also established links with ECW, which led to Misterio, Konnan and Psicosis working for ECW on a part-time basis throughout 1995. Things gradually became even worse when top stars Blue Panther and Fuerza Guerrera jumped ship, to ironically enough start their own promotion (Promell, which was later known as Promo Azteca). By early 1996, Konnan and Eddie Guerrero were working for WCW (Konnan also became head booker for AAA rival Promo Azteca and once even claimed that Pena likes young boys!) and Rey, Psicosis and Juvi departed AAA by April 1996.

Trying to rebound, Pena responded to key losses in his roster by elevating a new bunch of youngsters such as Abismo Negro, Heavy Metal, Latin Lover and Cibernetico to go along with the remaining established main event veterans like Perro Aguayo, Octagon and Jerry Estrada. AAA coasted along throughout 1997 and 1998 with business still relatively good, although it couldn’t touch the match quality they were producing in 1994. Unfortunately, by 1999 the overall product had nose dived considerably with main events centered around the wooden Cibernetico and the downright terrible Perro Aguayo. Still, business was still surprisingly decent. As AAA entered the new millennium, they switched gears and gave pushes to Perro Aguayo Jr. and the returning Hector Garza, which led to a hot feud between Garza/Lover and Aguayo Jr/Metal, which pretty much carried AAA throughout the latter months of 2000 since the under-card literally became unbearable. Things started to slip in early-2001 as Pena continued the Garza/Lover vs. Aguayo/Metal feud despite it being well past it’s prime, and also pushed the stale Vipers vs. Vatos Locos in a similar manner. Ironically enough, AAA had slipped into the trap that EMLL had fallen into the early 90’s by continually pushing the same old guys and running the same venues.

And now onto the current situation. It all started in April of this year when mid-card wrestler Charly Manson was injured in a "Extreme Rules" match that Antonio Pena had specifically booked. Manson suffered a fractured skull when he was involved in a botched table and ladder spot. Manson obviously needed extensive hospital treatment, yet Pena flat-out refused to pay for private health-care for Manson despite him injuring himself due a flimsy ladder that Pena had purchased for the match. As you’d expect, this angered the majority of the roster. The first to show his anger in public was Pentagon, who while wrestling in Japan announced that he was quitting AAA due to money problems and also the fact that Manson was a close friend of his. Things simmered down somewhat over the next couple of months, but rumors began to spread that longstanding AAA employee Blue Demon Jr. was ready to quit the promotion. Since then there’s been several rumors floating around but I intentionally avoided using them in the weekly Rudo Ramblings news section since they had no real credibility at the time (expect loads of fact less rumors to pop up in Rudo Ramblings from now on). This week, the Lucha scene has been going crazy with wild rumors. Here’s the latest (thanks to Rob Bihari):

Perro Aguayo Jr: Wants to head over to EMLL to work an angle with his dad when he returns.

Latin Lover: He wants to work a part-time schedule to allow more time for his soap opera work.

Octagon: Definitely wants out, would probably end up in EMLL.

Heavy Metal: Has apparently had talks with EMLL boss Paco Alonso and EMLL booker Panico already.

Electro Shock: Wants to work the weekly Indy shows in Tijuana alongside his buddy Pentagon.

Dos Caras and Dos Caras Jr.: Both want to head to EMLL.

Oscar Sevilla: Wants to work up in Tijuana.

Blue Demon Jr.: Has officially quit this week (we predicted this weeks ago) and may end up in Michinoku Pro over in Japan alongside Pentagon.

Plus the majority of the opening match guys want out; god knows where they’ll end up.

Keep in mind, only one guy has quit so far and it’s quite feasible to say that that no other guys will be leaving. However, they do say what comes around goes around, and Pena took advantage of unhappiness in the EMLL camp originally, so it’s beyond irony if the same thing could occur with his very own group. interesting times ahead.

THE MIND'S OBITUARY - by James McGill

Okay, I have returned. Listen to those fans go wild. What I feel like writing about is, to me anyway, the most entertaining element of the current WWF. In fact, and I know this could be viewed as rather over-enthusiastic, I believe that the backstage antics of Austin, Angle and Vince are perhaps the most amusing things wrestling has ever produced. The past two weeks have contained more humour than the previous year combined, and I’m just praying the hilarity continues.

I’m sure all of you have witnessed the past couple of week’s television, but I feel like reproducing some of the classic moments concerning this bizarre trio. If I didn’t, this column would be rather small. Anyway, the basic storyline seems to be an increasingly paranoid Stone Cold doing anything to remain best buddies with Vince while the sneaky Kurt Angle tries to sidle in. Austin, desperate to dispatch Angle, has played a number of cruel pranks on the Olympic Hero but none of it seems to phase Angle. This has caused some of the most surreal moments in WWF history. The random hugs by Austin on Vince are hilarious, but I literally couldn’t move when he suddenly clutched Vince in a tender embrace during Torrie Wilson’s debut. It just came out of nowhere; that’s why it was so effective. Austin scares me at the moment because he just seems so into this character. That’s why he’ll go down in history as one of the greatest ever; it’s not just the in-ring work and mic-work that are vital, the actual character itself is so important. The way he walks, the way he suddenly snaps… Austin is a brilliant actor. His entire body language has changed since the heel turn and I believe it’s all these little things that have been the crucial factor in Austin’s return to magnificence.

Kurt Angle is the future. Never before have I seen a guy with as much potential as the self-proclaimed superhero. Not only does he have incredible in-ring attributes as well as being the most consistently funny mic-worker in the business - he also has this geeky look that makes you feel like crying with laughter just looking at him. Earlier I mentioned the scene with Torrie, but even funnier than that - a feat I’d thought impossible - was Austin presenting Kurt with *that* hat. When Austin and Vince moved and Angle appeared with that miniature cowboy hat with the big red star… words can’t describe the brilliance of that moment. It got even better when he was acting so honoured to be awarded such a great present. What I’m trying to get at here, and probably doing a rather mediocre job of doing it, is that the awesomeness (I love that word, it’s so under-used) of the moment would have been spoiled if it had been anyone other than Kurt’s big goofy face under that ridiculous hat. The look on his face after his tremendous phrase, "Where there’s DDP there’s Booker T" was given a slightly hostile reaction from Vince and Austin, and was also priceless. But the good thing, although he’s portrayed as a harmless goof at times, is that fans are starting to buy him as a dangerous wrestler at times now. The crowd was really digging the vicious post-match beat-down of Booker T on Raw, although I think *I* would have achieved a decent pop for ending that fiasco. Anyway, Angle looked just as brutal as Austin, and the little look they shared before turning on Buff Bagwell made my WWF-Mark-4-life heart tingle a little.

It’s strange how fate works. If Triple H had still been around it’s almost guaranteed that this weird alliance between Angle and Austin would never have occurred. It gives me chills just thinking about how boring the Austin-HHH combination was in comparison. Also, if both Austin-Angle hadn’t been injured at the KOTR they’d be both actively feuding with other people. Thank God for serious injuries, that’s all I can say.

Before I disappear into obscurity for another week, I would be dumb not to speculate on Invasion. All I can say is that I hope things improve for WCW because this week, Raw in particular, was just such a disaster for everyone involved. I felt so sorry for the wrestlers on Raw because that was the most hostile reaction to a match I’ve ever seen. But in fairness, the match was abysmal. They should have formatted the show better; if the WCW match had been in the first hour I doubt the negative response would have been so alarming. Booker T is supposed to be Austin’s main enemy but Jackie got a bigger pop on Smackdown than Booker did. That is worrying. It would be disappointing if the biggest angle in history was wasted and I think the only way it can succeed now is if Vince gets the cheque book out. The WWF fans are really not buying Booker T as a legit threat and you know, although it would cause fury online, Hulk Hogan could be the answer. He has that instant credibility and at least he would get some support from the fans. With the jeers ringing in my ears after that last comment, I now depart.
