Place in History - Diablo Velazco is one of the most influential people in the history of professional wrestling and a legend in lucha libre in particular. However, he was only a small undercarder named Telmo Velazco who won a few minor titles. He was not a powerhouse promoter, genius booker or silver-tongued announcer. Diablo Velazco is one of the most successful trainers of all-time. After eight years in the sport, Velazco began breaking in talent at the gym in his hometown of Guadalajara. Like his own maestro, Raúl Romero, Velazco believed in firm grasp of amateur wrestling before developing the abilities that make superstars. This was passed on to students of his own like Gory Guerrero, Rolando Vera, and Hiro Matsuda, who became successful stars and trainers themselves. Throughout the 1940s and 1950s, some of his students like Guerrero, Tarzán López, Cavernario Galindo had became major stars in Mexico City. So when the Arena Coliseo de Guadalajara went up in 1959, Diablo was the fitting choice for their gym. His output took off and Diablo Velazco developed a sparkling reputation. Aspiring luchadors willingly relocated to Guadalajara to learn under the master. In a training career that ran approximately sixty years, Diablo Velaszo put out on average a quality student per year. From legendary superstars like Mil Máscaras, El Rayo de Jalisco and Perro Aguayo to top notch rudos like Satánico and Los Hermanos Dinamita, from great workers like El Solitario, El Dandy and Black Man to his final disciples, Shocker and Mr. Águila, Diablo Velazco's trainees run the gamet. He remained involved through 1997 when heart troubles sidelined him and he died a couple years later. Diablo Velazco is like a small pebble thrown into the pond, he might not have seemed significant at first, but the ripples he caused will be felt for years to come.
