Place in History - One of the forgot workers of puroresu because he was merely a supporting character throughout his days as a top junior heavyweight. Kuniaki Kobayashi rubbed elbows with New Japan's best before leaving as part of Riki Choshu's jobbers-to-the-stars team, Ishin Gundan. While his peers found success, Kobayashi found little, even when they paired up with Giant Baba and All Japan. The juniors there were kept on a low profile and did little. Kobayashi never was much more than a top flight worker who was given few opportunities. In the mid-80s however he was paired with Tiger Mask, one of New Japan's most popular stars. Kobayashi was able to prove himself as his matches with Mask rivaled the more highly heralded Mask- Dynamite Kid matches. Kobayashi was less of a brawler than Dynamite, but was just as strong as a heel. This managed to carved a niche for him and he continued to have excellent feuds with other juniors until the decade came to a close. Kobayashi remained semiactive for much of the 90s before retiring in 2000. One of the best workers of the early days of modern junior wrestling, Kuniaki Kobayashi is one of the must-sees of 80s Japanese wrestling.
