My Poetry Continued

Time to Die

The doctor comes in
he has nothing to give
except the fact
you have two years to live
you receive a killing chill
and feel you want to cry
Many times you thought of not living
now you don't want to die
you say, there must be a cure
he doesn't even smile
you wonder when you walk
if it will be your last mile
you tell the one you love
everything will be all right
then you go to sleep
and you die that night

For Bob

How easily some people have it
they can always find a friend
they are always with someone
but end up lonely in the end
I had a friend at one time
someone to talk to, to clear my head
but he went away from me
you know, he is dead
I have searched for many years
looking for another friend
someone I could count on
right up to the end
It's kind of odd to say this
it's kind of odd to feel
to feel I've found this friendship
a friendship that is so real

Today/Tomorrow

Today is a world built for tomorrow
Today is a joy and a sorrow
Tomorrow is a world built for today
Tomorrow I'll wish today had stayed

Viet Nam

"Duck your heads, it's another attack from the Reds", the Captain shouts, we all abide, I jump behind a tree to hide. I hear a shot, I feel the pain deep within my side. I look down I see the blood, my body falls, I hear a thud. I see the dark, it's twelve noon. I hear them say, "the medics will be here soon".

The pick me up, take me away. It's still dark, it's still day. I hear them say, "he'll be dead before the end of the day". The chaplain comes in, I hear him say "forgive him of all sin". He hangs his head and gives me up for dead.

I see the flag fly, I have a tear in my eye. I see the red, I see the white, I see the field of blue. I close my eyes, now you know dear, that I just died for you.

On War

War, in the Middle East and Nam
Why are the world leaders calm
As they tell how many men have died
when everyone know that they have lied?
War, it's always present in our sight
Why do world leaders send the young to fight?
Countless numbers have gone and died
The numbers they give us, we know they lied.
War, Will it never reach an end?
When will world leaders learn to bend?
Why must young men go out and die?
Why must peace talks be nothing but a lie?
War, oh yes, someday it will stop
World leaders on the bottom not on top
It will stop when the whole world dies
And no one remains to hear the lies.
