ODD-SHAPED STATES

Nature abhors squares and right angles. Many minerals due to their crystal lattice structure do form in sharp angles. As nature gets her hands on them, through the process of weathering, the edges before eroded into rounder shapes. Because the plains states, and rocky mountain states are geographically newer, they still maintain the original crystal lattice. The older states have been eroded by nature, and have gentler shapes.

What I have always thought odd, looking at the map of the US, is that all the states fit together, with no overlapping or leftover pieces. What are the odds of taking 48 oddly shaped pieces, and having them fit together so snugly?
