THE PASSING OF A FRIEND

Majestic oak, it's me again, I've come to visit you,
To relive special memories, the way I always do.

I've sat beneath your branches, so many many times,
to rest or just to meditate, and even make up rhymes

If someone heard me talk to you, they'd doubt my sanity.
I guess I'm sentimental, but you're a friend to me.

I'd estimate your age to be, two hundred years at least.
If you could talk, the tales you'd tell, would be a listeners feast.

In younger days, I'd climb your limbs, and see for miles around.
With never fear of falling, you'd protect me from the ground.

You've outlived my ancestors, for several generations,
You've witnessed bloody wars of men, and seen the change of nations.

I marvel at your massive trunk, from which an acorn grew.
GOD really did a work of art, when HE created you.

I wonder just how many birds, you've given home to nest.
Through countless storms and winds of time, you survived, and stood the test.

I've watched you as the seasons change, each one, artistic scene.
Your branches filled with winter's snow, completely void of green.

You must have shed ten million leaves, of yellow gold and brown.
And given birth to countless trees, from your acorns on the ground.

You've lived through many changes, and seen progress taking place,
From the deafening roar of cannon fire, to men in outer space.

Old friend, I've rambled on and on, about memories from the past.
They'll live with me forever, but this visit is my last.

I came today in sadness, my heavy heart is sore,
Because of that word progress, I'll visit you no more.

Soon this place you've ruled for years, will be a shopping mall.
What GOD has built in beauty, ambitious men will fall.

Even now, I see the dust, I hear the heavy engines sound.
With man-made tools of sharpened steel, they've come to cut you down.

I'm leaving now, with dampened eyes, I'll not stay til' the end.
I cannot stand to watch it, this "passing of a friend."
