ODE TO PARENTS

They trusted me up to a point, for things I said and did.
Why shouldn't they, they're mom and dad, and I'm their loving kid.

So what, if things they did for me, to show their love and care.
They'd sometimes have to sacrifice to see, I'd get more than my share

But after all they're parents, what good do parents serve.
But provide for me my daily needs, even things I don't deserve.

It's easy just to lie and say, 'You just don't understand',
As long as they don't catch me, or make me show my hand.

A lie is such a simple thing, I know I've done things worse.
I've even told a second lie, to cover up the first.

They tried to teach me right from wrong, now really, what's the point?
They'd probably want to punish me, if they caught me with this joint.

When my grades were down, they grounded me. Oh well that's nothing new.
You'd think they'd understand that I, had better things to do.

They warned me about older kids, Do they think I'm a fool?
They talked about the facts of life. Heck, I learned more in school.

They warned me not to be out late, the streets aren't safe to roam.
Well, if they lay a hand on me, I'll run away from home.

That's what I'll do, I'll run away, that'll really make them sad.
I can learn to live without, the things I've always had.

They always say they love me, big deal, I'll bet they don't.
Sometimes I have to pitch a fit, to get the things I want.

Even when I broke the law, they nearly fell apart.
You'd think I was the only kid who broke their parents' heart

That's no worse than if I'd dropped and broke a glass or cup.
Why should I be punished, that's just part of growing up.

Well--finally now, I have grown up, that happened years ago.
My parents knew this day would come. They tried to tell me so.

I've learned a lot since I grew up, and now I know first hand,
My folks weren't dumb, for it was me, who didn't understand.

If I had only done the things, they wanted me to do,
Life would much easier now, since,----I'm a parent too!!
