The little yellow building on the corner of the lot, the little old yellow building which was visited a lot. Visited by both the young and old, and it did not make any difference if it were warm or cold.
The roof was shake shingles but patched a lot, the roof was all mossy for a lot of moisture it had felt. But no vent stack did it have, for it vented up through the seat.
Just a one holer, yes a one holer it was, located on the far corner of the lot, located out where it would smell the least. For it was used by every one. Used by all and revered by few, but a function it did serve.
The boards were warped and some nails were loose; it had withstood a lot of storms, painted whatever color the house and garage were, it was painted until, they were vinyl sided covered one year.
The door has an old brass knob, and a piece of cardboard covers the lune. Just a one holer out on the corner of the lot, just an old privy which has become passé that is what this old privy has become.
There it has set for a very long time, there it has been since the house was built. There it is and you know what? My wife says I have to tear it down. Remove a historical artifact, remove something which has relieved us all. Remove that old privy and level the ground, plant flowers and then forget it was there. “I will think on it,” was the reply I gave to her.
And so things became a rat race, things came and went at a hectic pace. The old privy was sort of forgotten about as four children we did have. And then oh one day, some bad chili I had eaten and the girls were all down with the flu, and so to the old privy I did run.
I opened the door, and flipped up the seat, and did proceed to sit. And as I sat and looked around, a lot of history I did see, old Sears Roebuck catalogues, and a couple from Monky Wards. A stack of newspapers from before the Korean war, and a calendar from 1961, did the little privy decorate.
And so after that fateful bout, I found my self sneaking out, sneaking out to that little yellow shed, and sitting and enjoying myself, for it was the only place where I , where I could just relax and do my thing.
Well that old privy will stay right there, and I will use it as long as I can. And would you believe it, would you at all? That privy became an agenda item for the town hall.
