There were seven igloos when mama, papa and five younguns started to town on a one-dog sleigh for provisions. The snow and ice glistened and they sang every Christmas carol they knew. Poor old one-dog was tested to his limits, but he was a 90-pounder and he took pride in being this useful. The family passed seven miles and seven fancy igloos. Papa put his arms around mama and whispered, "Aren't you glad we added a room each for the children"? Oh, yes, dear, and now, not to be selfish, I hope we will not have to add an 8th. The sky was so colorful that day, pink, coral, orange, blue, seagreen and fuschia as one color blended into another to cover the northern sky with a solid rainbow. The Provisions Shoppe, itself a complex of igloow loomed over the hill. The family leaped out and went through the igloo maze, the children begging for ice candy (similar to our popsickles with more sugar), frozen cookies, and frozen weiners. Mother doing her motherly-limiting, ordered spools of frozen leather threads, bread and frozen fruits whale meat, blubber and bones for One-Dog.. Papa packed in some charcoal briquettes for the ice barbecue built far away from the house, and which must be rebuilt after each cooking time. Giddyup, kids, Papa yelled and 5 sets of footsteps ran to the sleigh. "Here we go again said One-Dog," and off they went. Poor One-Dog was exhausted after the family loaded off the sleighs and went inside their each appointed igloo to sleep. When Papa and Mama built those individual igloos, they didn't think that poor One-Dog would need some shelter, too--he had always cuddled with them in the "Main House." One-Dog was smart! He started scratching the ice and discovered that the pile behind him had become as high as one of the children's igloos. So, with his paws, he scratched out a door and hollowed out the inside. Pa had left an old blanket out for him, and he dragged it inside his new house. That night a little rain came down and smoothed the outside of his new home.

The family awoke in the morning, yawned and stepped outside in their parkas, and what to their wondering eyes did appear but an 8th igloo with a fluffy dog's tail rounding the opening. They always knew where to find One-Dog after that, but One-Dog didn't always find them, for he often wandered to find a Two-Dog. He knew now how to provide for a family.
