That band with the misleading name has much more history than most people realize. The Barenaked Ladies(neither nude, nor female) have actually released four full studio albums, a popular EP, and a live album. The success of their most recent album, Stunt, is nearly overwhelming. Popuar radio hits "One Week" and "It's All Been Done Before" have found tireless air play on a variety of stations. But, so many of the songs that broke the Barenaked Ladies(BNL, for short) into the American main stream came off previous albums. Gordon, their first album, was originally released in 1992. It quickly sold nine hundred thousand copies in Canada. The album was so popular that it became a victim of overexposure as their Canadian market made a mediocre turn out for their next two albums, Maybe You Should Drive, and Born on a Pirate Ship. The Barenaked Ladies(BNL for short), looked South to the United States. Soon, they had hits on the American airwaves as well. "The Old Apartment"(Pirate Ship), and "If I had a Million Dollars"(Gordon) became Radio 104 stand-bys. BNL's live performances also contribute greatly to their popularity. With three Connecticut concerts (Radio 104fest and the HORDE tour at The Meadows, and an awesome show with opening band, Cowboy Mouth, at The Oakdale) they left their mark on our state this summer! This Canadian band is in America to stay. They're showing the kind of talent and industriousness that demands your attention without hyped up publicity stunts. This is one band that makes great music. Back to Reviews page Ryan's Writings main page |
