History was made in New York NL as Ken Holtzman(14-11) tossed a no-hitter and
the New York NL Mets defeated the reeling Los Angeles Dodgers by the score of
2 to 0.
Holtzman had an afternoon to remember. Heck, it's one we'll all remember!
What a game at Shea Stadium! He walked 3 Los Angeles batters. The New York
NL players and coaches started to leave Holtzman alone with his thoughts
after the game reached the 7th inning. By the time the 9th inning rolled
around, you could hear a pin drop every time he went to his wind-up - and an
explosion after every out. New York NL had just 5 hits for the afternoon.
Juan Marichal(6-8) was charged with the loss. He pitched 7 innings allowing
only 5 hits and no walks. 'I gave it everything I had. It's probably the
greatest day of my life,' Holtzman said. 'I was out there focusing on my
catcher's glove, that's all. I just concentrated on pitching my game.'
