League of Champions XV: Jul 2004 New Entrants 1909 St Louis Cardinals 97-65 and the Brooklyn Superbas 106-56 The 1955 New York win their 3rd LOC Championship Title. The 1909 Brooklyn Dodgers made a strong showing in their first LOC tournament. They went 91-71 to finish 2nd. Rounding out the top 4 were the 1957 Giants and 1955 Yankees. The 1909 Cardinals and the 1957 Yankees were eliminated. Willard Schmidt NYN 55 wins the Cy Young and Mickey Mantle NYN 57 wins the MVP. League of Champions XIV: Jun 2004 New Entrants 1958 Boston Red Sox 98-64 and the 1958 Baltimore Orioles 97-65 New York has a monopoly right now on the League of Champions Tournament. This series, the 1957 New York Giants win their 3rd League of Champions Tournament. That's the most of any team past or present. They have won every League of Champions tournament (3) since entering at the end of 1957. Also advancing are the 1955 Yankees, 1955 Giants and the 1957 Yankees. The 1958 entrants were eliminated in their first tournaments. Ted Williams smached 62 homers for the 57 Yankees and created 197 runs! League of Champions XIII: March 2004 New Entrants 1908 St Louis Cardinals 97-65 and 1908 Cincinnati Reds 97-65 The Giants teams continue to dominate. The 1957 Giants finish the Tournament at 104-58. The 57 and 55 Giants finish 1-2. The Yankees of 55 and 57 finish right behind them with 3rd-4th place. Of course, this means the new additions to the tournament....were destroyed. St Louis 73-89 and Cincinnati 53-109 are eliminated. League of Champions XII: February 2004 New Entrants: 1957 Giants (109-53) and 1957 Yankees (108-54) The 1957 Giants began the tournament with a 28-28 record but then went on an unprecedented tear and had three straight 20 win months to take the title in the 12th version of the League of Champions. The Giants won by 16 games over the other new entrants the 1957 New York Yankees. The 1954 Philadelphia A's have now won the most games in WRL League of Champions history but unfortunately, by winning only 76 games in this tourny, they find themselves eliminated along with the 1907 Pittsburgh Pirates. Ted Williams from the 1957 Yankees wins the MVP and Clem Labine wins the Cy Young from the 1957 Giants. League of Champions XI: January 2004 New Entrants: 1907 Detroit Tigers (106-56) and 1907 Pittsburgh Pirates (97-65) Although the Tigers finished with one of the best records in WRL History, they failed to make it past the first appearance in the League of Champions XI. The 1955 Yankees win their second LOC Championship by 6 games over the 1955 Giants. The 1954 A's will also return and it will be their 7th LOC tournament which will be an all time record. The 1907 Pirates will return as they finished with an 81-81 record. Also eliminated along with the 07 Tigers are the 06 Pirates who went 79-83 and just missed the cut. Ted Williams wins the MVP and Don Newcombe wins the Cy Young Award. Both are from the 1955 Yankees. |
