Robbie Fowler will undergo a medical on Wednesday to clear the
way for him to sign a four-and-a-half year deal with Manchester
City.
On Tuesday Fowler agreed personal terms with the Maine Road club
over a £7m move from Leeds United.
If he gets the all-clear in the medical he should sign by the
end of the day, and City hope to have the England forward in the
side against Newcastle on Saturday.
The former Liverpool striker, who currently earns
£42,000-per-week at Leeds, is understood to be taking a
£7,000-per-week pay-cut to link up with City boss Kevin Keegan.
Fowler has spent most of this season injured after undergoing a
hip operation in the summer following his return from the World
Cup finals, where he appeared in England's 3-0 win over Denmark.
He returned to action for Leeds in December and has hit two
goals - against Bolton and Sunderland - as he has fought his way
back to full match fitness.
In total, Fowler has played in 32 games and scored 14 goals for
Leeds since joining the club from Liverpool for £11m in November
2001.
The striker appeared as a second-half substitute for Leeds
during Saturday's 2-1 defeat and got a great reception from the
City fans when he was introduced.
Leeds boss Terry Venables stressed on Sunday that he would
prefer to keep Fowler.
But it seems likely that cash-strapped Leeds will take the money
on offer.
If the Fowler deal goes through, it will be the fifth major
departure from Elland Road since Venables replaced David O'Leary
as manager.
After failing to qualify for the Champions League for the second
successive year, Leeds have been under pressure to reduce their
mounting debts.
Rio Ferdinand, Robbie Keane and Lee Bowyer have all been sold.
And Olivier Dacourt has joined Serie A outfit Roma on loan until
the end of the season when a permanent deal is expected to be
sealed. |
