: : journal guidelines: :

Format :
Each journal that is submitted needs to be at least 750 words, in size 12 font, Times New Roman or an equivalent sized font, double-spaced with 1-1.5 inch margins. This generally means that the journals should be two to three pages long using the standard paper guidelines. Journals should also be spell-checked with the use of proper grammar and sentence structure. Sentence fragments and lack of transitions between paragraphs are not acceptable. A journal that does not meet these minimal requirements as determined by the facilitator, should be redone by the student.

Note: Technical problems, in terms of grammar and sentence structure can be directed towards the The Gayle Morris Sweetland Writing Center (English Composition Board) in Angell Hall.
Telephone: (734) 764-0429.
Location: 1139 Angell Hall.

Content :
In terms of the content, a student should choose at least two articles from the assigned readings to discuss. Students should not summarize or simply rephrase what is said in the articles. Instead, students are encouraged to think critically about the articles and to voice their own opinions in reaction to the articles that they have chosen. Students are also required to include a set of three discussion questions at the end of their journals based on the readings for that week. The questions should be thought-provoking and demonstrate students’ understanding of the readings. Students are also encouraged to use these questions during the in-class discussions.

Plagiarism :
Plagiarism in any form is not acceptable. Students may not write journals together and/or submit similar or identical journals to their respective facilitators. Any outside materials, sources or ideas used in the journals should be cited accordingly. Failure to do so can result in an academic disciplinary action being taken upon the student and a possible expulsion from the university. If a student is having a difficulty with their journals, he/she should contact his/her facilitator. If a student is unsure of the proper way to cite sources, please consult the facilitators or the various writing resources available on campus.
