Day 18: Bumbershoot
We
left around 9:00 to go into Bumbershoot today and would park near donwtown
as parking is free onholidays and sundays. This way we can take the Monorali
from the Westlake Shopping mall into Bumbershoot for only $?.I
now went back to go to the Experience Music Project (EMP) museum. This is
the new museum that Paul Allen has built with some of his fortunes from
Microsoft. Paul also owns the Seattle Seahawks and Protland Trailblazer.
The cost is rather steep $1?.00 and is very busy today as there is a line
waiting to get in. Once inside they give you headphones sets that will let
you click on individual items to hear more music and text information. There
are several room that will let you learn about Jimi Hendrix, Early Seatle
blues, Grunge, Jazz and much more. Seattle has a pretty good hisrtory of
music that includes Ray Charles, Heart, Quincy Jones, Jimi Hendrix, Pearl
Jam, Nirvana, Ventures and several more I can't remember right now.
It
now time to go inside Bumbershoot and first thing was to get something to
eat. They had all kinds of food from thelocal restaurents. This included
cajun, italian, middle east, mexican, oriental, african and several others.
I bought some Cajun food and then sat down by the Blues Stage where the
Jimmie Gilmore group was playing. This person can play the quitar as he
has a mixture of country added to the blues music. I stayed and watched
unitl they finished about thirty minutes before ginto the maintstage football
field to watch Jown Osborne. This iswho I wanted to see today as she comes
every year andput on a good show. It was a great day weather wise inthe
70's and Osbornes playe dfor 90- minuts with alot of new music that was
to be release in October. Thei included a new remake of 'Love is Alive'
by Gary Wright that sounde good withvher 'bluesy' voice. alot of her new
music is more pop rather than blues and was a little disappointed, she did
play 'One of us at the end ' and mad everybody happy befoer leaving.
In
a couple hoursJoan Jett would be in the Coliseum but it was time to just
people watch as you would see people paying for massages, kids blowing bubbles
or playing with legos, families going to the Pacific Science Center, artists
with paintings and other crafts for sale, teenagers throwing frisbees and
kicking hacky sacks, or go into the enclosed beer gardens and sit down to
a cool one. These were things I did for the next couple hours before going
into the coliseum to see Joan Jett. She played her punk/rock music which
satisfied most of the audience as she has been a favorite her for many years.
I had seen her before and wouldn't staylog as I had to work tomorrow. I
wouldn't be able to see Ben Harper who would be playing at the stadium later
tonight. I did stay late five years ago to see the best concert I had ever
been to and that was when Band of Gypsies group got back together again
and played hendrix tuen. This also included Stanly Jordan, Randy Hansen,
Buddy Miles and serval other musicians who were influenced by Hendrix. But
that was five years ago todaay. There are many good memeories from Bumbershoot
and will be many more inthe future. If you ever gta chance to come to Seattle
make it Labor daya and come to Bumbershoot. I got home arund 10:00 and this
is what I woud consider to best Washington.
