BREEDING RATIO: 1 Males : 1 Female BREEDING WATER: 26C (80F); pH of 6.5; dCH < 0.5. OTHER BREEDING INFO: This fish spawns in the early morning while it is still dark. Spawning is triggered by a high daytime temperature (30C/88F) followed by gradual cooling of the water during the night to approximately 26C (80F). During spawning the female lays upto 200 eggs. The incubation period is about 15 hours. The eleutherembryos are 2.7mm long and adhere to firm objects by means of a sticky secretion produced by glands on the top of the head. After four days they switch to exogenous nutrition. Harder water should be gradually added as the young fish frow and as soon as black-and-white markings appear on the caudal fin they should be moved to a larger tank. The young fish are shy and sensitive to increased concentrations of nitrates and nitrites. Growth is relatively rapid and sexua; maturity is reach at the age of six months. | Photo Credit: Erik Cohen Photo Credit: Erik Cohen |
