Skills at the 2002 Nationals
Many male gymnasts competed with extremely difficult vaults. Li Xiao Peng, the 1999 World Champion on vault, did not compete on the event. However, he has 3 10 SV elements ready: a Yeurchenko half-on 2.5 twist front layout, a handspring double front *pike*, and a handspring front 2.5 twist front layout.
Yang Wei, who just competed a triple twist Tsukahara at the Pacificic Alliance, did a Yeurchenko double back *pike* (SV: 10, 10)
Lu Bin on vault: hanspring front layout 2.5 twist, Tsukahara double pike (SV: 10, 10)
Kang Xin on bars: free hip hetch to HB, invert full-pike Jaeger, Pak, toe-on shoot to HB, free hip full pirouette. She invented a new skill on the uneven bars back in 2001: clear hip circle back on high bar, hecht to double back tuck dismount. This skill should be worth at least E. However, Kang did not receive any bonus for this dismount, because it is only rated D by the judges.
Kang Xin on beam: wolf jump-punch front, split leap-sheep jump-back tuck, ff-lo-lo, full turn, front aerial-stag ring leap, Rulfova, ff-ff-double tuck, stuck her dismount! (SV: 10)
Kang Xin on floor: double layout, front tuck-round off-bh-2.5 twist, ro-whip-whip-bh-double pike
Yang Yun on vault: beautiful layout Cuervo, Yeurchenko 1.5 twist. (SV: 9.7, 9.7)
Yang Yun on bars: she did a very elegant Bi turn (even better than Bi Wen Jing) followed by Jaeger. (SV: 10)
Yang Yun on beam: wolf jump-stag ring leap, punch front, switch side leap-Yeurchenko loop, double turn, front aerial-ff-lo, Rulfova, 2.5 twist. (SV: 10)
Huang Jing on floor: showed different tumbling passes here than in 2001 National Games (where she did a double layout, whip-whip-double pike, triple twsit, pike full-in): half in half out mount, pike full in, whip-whip-double pike, triple twist dismount (SV: 10)
Huang Jing on vault: DTY, pike Cuervo (SV: 9.8, 9.6)
Lin Li on bars: Ling-Ling-pike Jaeger-Pak, Bi turn, Markelov with huge amplitude (SV: 10)
Liu Juan on bars: stalder hetch to HB, L-grip endo full pirouette-pike Jaeger-Pak, toe-on hetch to HB, endo full-front giant half-Tkatchev, full in dismount.
Liu Wei on beam: pike rudi
Chen Miao Jie on floor: doulbe layout, front handspring-front double twist, double pike.
Chinese Men's Future - Teng Hai Bin
The men's coach Huang Yu Bin was amazed by a new star, Teng Hai Bin, who did a great high bar set and won the event at the nationals. Huang thinks Teng is the most talented gymnast of the current crop, and has the ability to exceed his former pupils Li Jing (Huang's favourite pupil) and Olympic Champion Li Xiao Shuang.
2002 COMO Cup

2002 Nationals
Yang Wei, the Sydney silver all-around medalist, showed that he is still in charge over World Champion Feng Jing, by winning his third national AA title. Yang, frankly commented about Feng's 2001 World Championships victory as "a not very competitive performance." However, winning at Kunming was not easy, because it is a plateau city. Yang admitted this was his "most exhausting competition ever."
The reigning national games AA champion, Kang Xin, repeated her victory and won beam. However, many fans consider Li Xue Hong, who is still a junior, will be a big threat to Kang on beam. Li has a beautiful line and excellent form on this event. She has a gorgeous combo of full twisting wolf jump - Yang Bo jump.
Yang Yun, who has been out of shape since Sydney because of injuries and weight, finally came out of her own shadow. She brings hope to her fans by medaling in every individual competition. Yang, now taller and stronger, thinks that her new body type gives her both challenges and advantages: "I have to relearn many skills that I used to be able to do easily. However, my long line should help me present prettier gymnastics."
China will use only two competitions for the gymnasts as qualification to the Busan Asian Games this year (starting September 29th, 2002). Another test will take place soon.
