"Sally!"
"Go Wufei. I'm right behind you."
By the tone of her voice there was no room
for arguing. Silently
praying for fate to shine on them both, Wufei set his ebony eyes on
the distant jungle and ran. He faintly heard shouts from his right
as
he ran but paid them no mind. His entire being was focused on his
objective.
"There one goes! Fire!"
Bullets sprayed the ground, coming within
inches of his feet. He
gathered his failing stamina and increased his speed. The concealing
jungle was only a few meters away now. One final leap and he was
within the sheltering foliage. He turned hoping to see his partner
fast on his heels but saw nothing.
Forcing down the panic that reached up to
clench his heart he
looked again. A small breath of relief passed his lips when he found
Sally still hiding behind the stack of crates from which he had just
fled. She looked up and smiled, obviously relieved to see him safe
on
the other side of the airstrip.
~ Come on Sally ~ he mentally urged.
Sally quickly emptied her last clip and threw
the useless weapon
away in disgust. She carefully checked to see if it was clear to make
a break for it and after a moment's hesitation she was off. Wufei
watched nervously as the athletic woman tore across the packed earth
of the airstrip. A hundred meters…eighty meters…the distant between
her and safety disappearing rapidly. Then Wufei caught sight of motion
behind his partner. His gaze shifted to the crates they had used as
cover and saw a man lift his rifle to take aim.
"Sally, look out!"
A shot rang out across the field and time
slowed. Wufei watched
in horror as crimson blossomed above his partner's right breast,
shattering bone and tearing tender flesh.
"SALLY!!!!"
He didn't know what he was doing. He could
hear screaming but
could not comprehend it came from his own throat. Before he could
think Wufei leapt from the cover of the jungle and raced the remaining
thirty meters to his fallen partner. He skidded to a halt at Sally's
side, momentarily taken aback by the amount of blood pooling in the
dirt around her broken body.
"Oh gods, no."
Quickly and as carefully as possible he pulled
Sally to his chest
and returned to the jungle. Just as he entered the greenery he felt
a
bullet tear into his thigh but he stubbornly ignored the pain that
screamed across the damaged flesh. He ran as fast as he could, pushing
himself to the brink of his physical capabilities.
~ Hold on Sally. We're almost there. ~
Minutes passed in a blur of green and brown.
Nearly all his
mental faculties had ceased to work; Wufei was running on instinct
alone. Survive and protect. These three words encompassed the whole
of
his existence. Survive and protect. After what seemed an eternity he
collapsed at the banks of a shallow stretch of river. He immediately
recognized it as the site where he and Sally had been dropped into
the
jungle.
Numbly, he retrieved his communicator from
his belt and thumbed
the small device on. "Eagle One this is 05. Do you copy?"
Silence.
"I repeat. Eagle One this is 05. Do you copy?"
The communicator crackled as a voice came
finally came through,
"Copy 05. Eagle One here. What's your status?"
"Mission complete. Agent Water is down. Requesting
emergency
evac," Wufei intoned calmly. As he spoke his eyes drifted to Sally's
face. He though he'd seen her eyes flutter.
~ Don't be a fool Chang. ~
"Copy 05. Emergency evac approved. Estimated
time of arrival
is…thirty-five minutes. Acknowledge."
He scowled, "Acknowledged."
"Wufei?"
Wufei peered down at the precious weight in
his arms. He was
astonished to see Sally awake, although he noted the distant look in
her pale blue eyes.
"Shh, Sally. Save your strength."
A smile flittered across blood-spattered lips,
"Don't tell me
that Chang Wufei is worried?"
He frowned. ~ What is that supposed to mean?
~
"Sally, please. You are badly injured. You
mustn't speak," he
whispered insistently.
She laughed, a vulgar, bubbling sound. "I'm
a doctor Chang. Or
did you forget?"
A shadow of a smile crossed his strained features,
"Of course
not."
"How long till pick-up?"
"Half an hour."
Sally's feigned cheer shattered and a look
of hopelessness
settled on her paling features. She opened her mouth to speak but was
seized be a fit of coughing as her damaged lung refused to take in
air.
"You stubborn onna, I told you not to talk,"
Wufei reprimanded
her affectionately.
She smiled weakly, " Don't even start that
again. It took me more
than a year as your partner to get you to call me by my name. Don't
go
and ruin all my hard work now."
"Not much longer now," Wufei offered encouragingly.
Sally's
suffering seemed to be echoing within his own chest, a deep stabbing
pain near his heart.
~ Fool. You have seen blood shed before. What is different now?
~
"Wu-fei…I…"
"No! Sally, stay with me. Sally?"
~ Sally is what's different. She always has been…~
Holding back tears he didn't understand, Wufei
clutched Sally
even more tightly to him. In the distance he heard the sound of an
approaching helicopter and sent a prayer of thanks to whatever deity
might be listening.
As the helicopter touched down, two men in
a gray flight suit
with a red cross on the sleeve jumped out and ran towards him. One
motioned for him to relinquish his hold on Sally, which he did
reluctantly. The other offered him an arm for support.
"I have no need for assistance." Wufei snapped
at the paramedic.
"Sorry 05 but you look about ready to drop.
The sooner I get you
into the chopper the sooner we get your partner to a hospital."
Glaring darkly, Wufei allowed the man to assist
him into the
craft.
"You've got a nasty bullet wound on your leg,
sit down and let me
get a look at it," the paramedic instructed.
Wufei did as he was told, surprised he had
completely forgotten
about his own injuries. As the one paramedic carefully worked at
cleaning the wound in his thigh Wufei's eyes stayed on the team of
four others surrounding Sally.
"One gunshot, clean entry and exit."
"Appears that only two ribs were damaged,
both repairable.
Christ, there's a lot of blood. We have to bag her, hurry!"
"Blood pressure is ninety-seven over fifty.
Pulse is thirty-two."
"She's deteriating rapidly sir."
"I've lost pulse!"
~ Lost pulse? No! I can't lose her! ~
Wufei leapt from his seat, startling the paramedic
kneeling
beside him. He felt burning hot pain lance through his body and his
vision darkened around the edges.
~ I must help Sally. ~
His body refused to cooperate and he stumbled.
Suddenly, the gray
metallic floor rushed up to meet him and he lost consciousness.

Well folks inspiration comes in the strangest forms. Voila! Part two
of Untitled, now Truth is here. Enjoy!
Title: Truth (2/?)
Author: Skye
Rating: PG?
Warnings: Mild language. Possible angst in future. Kinda sappy.
Notes: This is part two of the first fic I have ever posted. I
actually got another part finished in the same day. This is a first.
I apologize for poor grammar. Look! A title, it hit me as I wrote the
last lines of this part. Let me know what you think. C & C desired
as
always!!

Several hours had passed before Wufei slowly
regained
consciousness. Groggily, he sat up in bed and looked about what was
obviously a hospital room. A very small and occupied hospital
room.
"Its about time you woke up."
Wufei scowled as he recognized the female's
voice, "Leave me in
peace onna."
Lucrezia Noin pushed away from the wall and
stepped into the
meager light provided by the bed side lamp. She was dressed in the
standard olive green Preventers slacks and tan shirt. Her flight
jacket hung on the back of a nearby chair. To the casual observer she
appeared coolly detached, yet Wufei could see the slight wrinkle
between her brows. She looked as if she was carrying the weight of
the world on her small shoulders.
"Wufei, I'm sorry."
He snorted, "What for?"
"For what happened to you...to Sally." she
answered, whispering
the last.
Sally. He had actually forgotten about his
mortally wounded
partner. He cursed himself under his breath and prepared to get out
of bed.
"Oh no you don't Chang Wufei. Sally would
have my head if I let
you out of that bed before the doctor clears you."
Her words stopped him cold, "She's...alive?"
Noin nodded, "She's downstairs in the CCU."
~ Thank the gods. ~
"I want to see her, now."
Noin frowned, "I told you-"
"Then go and get the damned doctor, onna!"
Noin threw her arms up in exasperation and
stormed towards the
door, "I'll never understand what the hell that woman sees in you!"
Wufei smirked as the sound of Noin screaming
at a nurse
somewhere down the hall. Then suddenly Noin's parting words hit home.
...I'll never understand what the hell that woman see in you...
~ Don't be ridiculous. Noin is a fool onna, what does she know?
She
is Sally's best friend though. Could there be something I'm missing?
~
The Asian man's features darkened, " We are
partners. Nothing
more."
"Talking to yourself Mr. Chang? That's hardly
healthy." a soft,
female voice chuckled from the doorway.
~ Of course. An onna. ~
Upon introducing herself, Doctor Nguyen proceeded
to give Wufei
a thorough examination. After an hour of answering what he deemed
pointless questions and issuing several threats of bodily harm Wufei
was at last rewarded for his cooperation. Frowning disdainfully as
a
nurse rolled him down the hall in a wheelchair, Wufei cursed his
luck. He cursed his luck even more fervently as he was wheeled past
Noin; who appeared to be barely containing her pleasure at
his discomfort.
At the end of the hall they entered an elevator.
During the ride
down to the third floor of the hospital the middle aged nurse
attempted to start a friendly conversation. Wufei remained
silent for the most part, pulling off a decent impersonation of one
Heero Yuy. As the elevator doors slid open the nurse clucked
reprovingly and happily picked up the pace. The massive electronic
doors of the CCU loomed before them and Wufei felt uneasy as he read
the numerous warnings painted on the white planes of wood.
Unfortunately his feeling of unease only intensified
within the
CCU doors. Everything in the place screamed of wrongness. The nurses
in their floral scrubs and white shoes. The constant beeping of
machinery within every room they passed. The sterile air that seemed
to press down on him from all directions.
~ Sally can't be in here. Not this place. This is wrong! ~
"Here we are Mr. Chang," the nurse said indicating
the doorway
to his left.
"I'll wheel myself in, thank you."
The nurse simply snorted in reply and left
him there. He waited
till after she was gone to finally enter the open doorway. Nothing
in
his nineteen years of life had ever prepared him for the
shock he now faced.
Sally Po was alive but barely. A respirator
tube protruded from
between bruised lips. Slender arms sporting at least three IV drips
as well as a blood bag, slowly returning the life-giving fluid to her
damaged body. Wufei wheeled closer, ignoring the voice in the back
of
his head telling him to turn away. He couldn't believe this small,
fragile creature was his partner of three years. He had to get
closer, had to make himself believe this wasn't a horrible nightmare.
~ This isn't real. This weak creature is not Sally! ~
Pale, cream colored cheeks. Long, honey curls
splayed across
gently sloping shoulders. This was Sally, his Sally.
~ My Sally? Absurd! We are simply partners, nothing more. Never
anything more. ~
His gaze drifted away from Sally's comatose
form coming to rest
on the monstrous equipment that presently sustained her life. He
longed to run as fast as he could away from that horrible whooshing
machine. From the hospital. From Sally.
~ I ran. She needed me and I ran from her. No, she told me to
go.
She said she would be right behind me. She's always been behind me.
~
And suddenly the truth hit him like a gundamium
fist to his
stomach. He needed her. Somehow in the four years since they first
met Sally had become so ingrained in his being that he could no
longer imagine working without her. More importantly, he couldn't
imagine living without her.
Without conscious thought he suddenly found
his hand holding
hers. He concentrated on the sight of his bronzed hand and her cream
colored one. Her smaller hand resting comfortably in his palm. It was
then he decided. If, no-when Sally woke up he would tell her how much
she meant to him. After everything she had done for him he would
honor her with the truth.
~ Yes. This is right. ~
The End
Part Three to come soon...
