Deep Impact Closing in on Comet
07.03.05 (12 a.m.) - Deep Impact's impactor and flyby spacecraft continue
imaging comet
Tempel 1. Over the next two hours, the impactor may perform targeting
maneuvers to refine its
path so it is on a collision course with Tempel 1. Impact is expected at
approximately 1:52 a.m.
EDT. The image above shows comet Tempel 1 as seen by the impactor, taken 1
hour 37 minutes
after the impactor was released from the flyby craft.

TONY EASTLEY: A number of recent unmanned space missions have ended
disastrously, so
it's ironic that the next big space adventure actually relies on the space
vehicle crashing.
NASA's Deep Impact mission that began on January the 18th to the comet
"Tempel 1" is about
to reach its dramatic climax.
Just hours ago a two-part spacecraft separated 133 million kilometres from
Earth, and one
section is now poised to smash into the comet.
The other part of the spacecraft will send pictures and data on the manmade
crater back to Earth
so scientists can learn what comets are made of and how they're
constructed.
Karen Barlow reports.
NASA scientists await Deep Impact climax
And the impact is due to hit around 4pm Eastern Standard Time.
Will our eyes have it?
If you don't have a pair of binoculars, your eyes will be able to
see
the comet before impact, because at 10th magnitude, our eyes can not
detect.
But after impact, the comet brightens to the expected 6th magnitude
or so, it may become visible without optical aid.
If you are not an experienced observer to pick it out from among the
stars.!?
