The US is partially back to business Today, there was very low GDP in the USA Yesterday.

Kou-Jay Chi's forwarding article reminds me of a classic Chinese joke about GDP caculation. It is proved that we Chinese had invented GDP hundreds years earlier than American did.

2 brothers in a village wanted to make money in the nearby city. They have decided to sell home made " Green Bean Soup " to the city people. The elder one pushed the vending car, the younger one brought with him 5 X 1 dollar bills for the change to customers.

During a rest after walked 3 miles, the younger one requested a bowl of soup from his brother. " No, all our green bean soup is sale for money not for consuming by ourselves" " How about to buy 1 bowl of soup from you by 5 dollars? " " It sounds a good deal,here is your ordered green bean soup."

In the next 3 miles walking , the younger brother pushed the vending car and the elder one get 5 dollars. The elder brother spent the 5 dollars for a bowl of green bean soup in their next stop. So the 5 dollars kept changing hand when each other enjoied a bowl of green bean soup.

Finally they arrived the city with empty pot, of course no imcome to their family. But they have made $5X GDP within their family. D = domestic.

Do you remember a famous trial happened over 10 years ago? the murder case of Simpson's wife. Wall Street Jounal reported that case had contributed $200 millions of GDP to the US.

Do you know why did the US government use GDP to replace GNP about 10 yesrs ago? The China government can learn the good part from what the US government has done.

A new measurement of the nuclear reaction ³He+⁴Heg⁷Be+g by Holmgren and Johnston in 1958, suggested that one of the terminal reactions in the proton-proton chain would produce energetic neutrinos which could be measured by the chlorine-argon radiochemical method. Encouraged by these developments, and with the support of the Brookhaven National Laboratory and the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission, I built a much larger experiment in the Homestake Gold Mine in Lead, South Dakota. The detector itself consisted of a 100,000-gallon tank filled with perchloroethylene, a solvent most commonly used for dry cleaning of clothing. The experiment was located nearly a mile underground, at the 4850 foot level of the mine. Initially, we observed no solar neutrino signal and expressed our results only as upper limits. Subsequent refinements in technique and, particularly, in counting methods, continued over the years, producing a solar neutrino signal approximately one-third of the expected flux from the standard solar model calculated by John Bahcall. This was the genesis of the so-called "solar neutrino problem".
