Douglas Putnam, born in 1806,  built this Italian style mansion for his wife Eliza in 1859. Unfortunately, Eliza passed away Sept. 9, 1862, due to heart disease at the age of 53. Douglas died in 1894, and his third wife, Sarah, sold the mansion to Harry D. Knox. The Knoxes renamed the mansion "The Anchorage".

The Knoxes sold it nine years later to the Merydiths who, in 1911, sold it to James Roberts. He later sold it in 1918 to Edward MacTaggert, and the mansion once again hosted the town's social life as well as musicians from all over the country. MacTaggert died in 1952, and his sister, Sopie Russell, maintained the estate until she died 10 years later.

In 1966, it was purchased by and used as a nursing and rest home, until it closed in 1986. It also became a site for unerals as well as weddings. Many people during this time reported hearing footsteps, voices, and seeing a lady in a long dress in the halls at the top of the stairs. Many believe this to be Eliza Putnam.

The Washington County Historical Society is the owner today. They voted in 1995 to restore the original owner's name to the estate; thus, the it is now called "The Anchorage/Putnam Villa".
