Second West Virginia
Filmmakers Film Festival Tuesday Oct 2- Sunday Oct 7
The West Virginia Filmmakers Festival played to an enthusiastic audience last February, showing films by many of our state's leading filmmakers.
This year it has been moved to the first week of October, starting on Tuesday, October 2, running through Sunday, October 7.  Films begin at 8:00 PM at night.  Saturday at 1 PM.  The opening film, Romper Stomper is the breakthrough film for Russell Crowe who is currently playing a WV native in his Christmas film, A Brilliant Mind.  The Australian film stars Crowe as a neo-nazi, stomping local wimps.  It was the first film in the US that presented the Aussie star.  On Wednesday, WV filmmaker Clyde Ware will be honored with a showing of his 1971 film,No Drums, No Bugles(1971) along with an interview filmed by Morgantown filmmaker Chip Hitchcock to be shown on WV PBS.  On Thursday, two new films by
Appalshop about WV people will be shown  Shelter, about a women's shelter in Lewisburg, and Mimi Pickering' portrait of Bluefield native Hazel Dickens in It's Hard to Tell the Singer from the Song.Anne Lewis and Mimi Pickering will both be present to discuss their films.   On Friday night only the second showing anywhere, after its premier in Baltimore, is Joshua Tunick's new feature, Mr. Smithereen Goes to Washington.  & "Scars Dont Sweat" (http://www.ctpfilm.com/mr_smithereen.html) He be present to introduce the film--Also World Champion Mountain Biker Gunner Shogrin will make apperance!!Saturday afternoon there will be a screening of videos entered into the Sutton's open competition, inviting all WV filmmakers, either living in the state or anywhere, to send in their indie productions.
(They must be on VHS cassette tapes.)  Saturday night at 8 PM there will be the Chillers Reunion with director Danny Boyd and other members of the cast and crew present
FILMING additonal footage for DVD release.  Immediately before, at 7 PM at the Landmark, there will be a party and John Lilly, musician and editor of Goldenseal magazine, will be singing originals, traditional folk, and vintage country songs from Hazel Dickens, Hank Williams, and Jimmie Rodgers. On Sunday,WV artist who is WVU Professor of Electronic Media Arts at WVU, Laleh K Mehran, will be showing several of her works.  She is the first electronic media arts teacher at WVU, receiving her MFA from Carnegie-Mellon, the leading institution in the world for electronic media arts.    For more information, contact Kevin Carpenter, president of
