John BOGGS [Parents] was born 1763 in Chester Co., PA. He died 1861 in Roane Co., VA. John married Susan A. DRENNIN on 1787 in Greenbrier Co., VA.

Notes for John Boggs:
John and Susan lived in Meadows of Greenbrier Co VA. They owned a large plantation in partnership with Charles McClung. They were stock dealers (cattle). John sold his share of the plantation and purchased 8000 acres in Roane County (now WV). He apparently lost this land due to faulty deed, but later purchased land between Spencer and Reedy and between Reedy Creek and Spring Creek.
(From 'Roane Co WV Family History 1989)

John & Susannah (Drennen) Boggs were married in Greenbrier Co.WV. on either 23 Apr 1787 or 25 Apr 1786. They and several of their married children left Greenbrier c.1830. John was b.14 Feb 1763 or 23 Feb 1758, s/o James Charles & Margaret Jane (Sharp) Boggs. (Marilyn Craft-Boggs Descendant)

Came to Roane County with his family from Greenbrier Co, VA and brought with him some 20 slaves. he gradually sold all of the slaves since" they proved unprofitable in this kind of country; and the white man found delight in working".
(From 'History of Roane Co' pub 1927 Wm H. Bishop.)
According to Andrew L. Vandale's biography (son of Sarah Boggs who married Vandel) the families came in 1832. (quoted by Bishop)

John Boggs, a son of James Charles and Margaret Jane (Sharp) Boggs, was born in Chester County PA February 14, 1763 and died in Roane County VA (WV) November 15, 1861. He was probably at the battle of Point Pleasant in 1774. He married Susan Drennan in Greenbrier County VA (WV) April 23, 1787. Susan, a daughter of Lawrence Drennan, was born about 1767. (Family History from internet)

Daniel Deweese says that John was one of the very early settlers on Spring Creek in what is now Roane County, WV.

Bishop shows a son, Hawkins, but suspect this was a middle name or a nickname for one of his sons.

1850 census Kanawha Co, VA John Boggs, 82, Farmer, 400, VA. Susan, 77, VA

Charles Boggs emigrated from Ireland with his family between 1746-1754. He landed at Phildelphia, PA and later moved to South Branch of the Potomac in Pendleton County. He had 11 childredn: 8 boys, and 3 girls. Five of his sons were born in Ireland: John, Jacob, and Charles Jr. fought in the battle of Point Pleasant, five fought in the Revolution. John was a private. Charles bought land in Pocohontas County which continued into Greenbrier.
His son John married Susan Drennan, d/o Thomas Drennan, a descendant of Jacob Marlin, a trader who explored the area from Prince George's County, MD to Greenbrier and Pocohantas counties. Marlinton, WV was named for him.
Drennan was spelled several different ways; Drennon, Drenner, Drennin. The original Drennens' were Irish. John and Susan are buried at Walnut Grove Cemetery.
Tax records in Greenbrier County indicate that taxes were paid by the Boggs, Vandale, and Leonard Simmons' family in the latter 18th century and first quarter of the 19th century. John Boggs purchased large tracts of land, some of which he lost through defective titles. A son Thomas Boggs, married Matilda Wiseman d/o Jerpenneh Wisemand, granddaughter of Coleb Wiseman. (I have some Wiseman history also). Their children were Caleb Jr., Mathilda and Elizabeth Ann Boggs, who became the wife of James Monroe Simmons. Thomas Boggs was a Representative to the State Legislature of West Virginia, the title of Esquire followed his name. These facts are recorded by Adam Hodam, and he referred to Matilda Wiseman Boggs as, "Aunt Tilly" who died in her rocking chair; she and 2 of her children are buried in Hodam Chapel Cemetery.
About 1829, John Boggs moved to Roane County with the Vandales and Leonard Simmons. The Boggs had large holdings of land in the Spring Creek area of Roane County, they were affluent people; it is reported they owned slaves, but this is not confirmed. The Boggs gave each child a large amount of money and a tract of land. It was reported that Thomas gave this daughter Elizabeth Ann $10,000 and a large tract of land.
According to Hardesty's History of Wirt County, Reedy District: The first settler was a man of the name of John Shepherd; he located and built the first cabin in 1806; he erected it on the bank
of Left Hand Reedy. In 1807, John Conrad, Peter Conrad and John Hartley found homes beside him, and in 1808 John Smith joined them. Other early settlers were W.R. Wells, Samuel Somerville, John Boggs, John Baker and George Owens.
It is said that many of the descendants of John Boggs had his reddish golden hair which was an Irish trait.

Susan A. DRENNIN [Parents] was born 1767 in VA. She married John BOGGS on 1787 in Greenbrier Co., VA.

Notes for Susan A Drennin:
Several of the Drennin family were killed by Indians. It is said that Susan and her brother were captured by the Indians, that her father was scalped and left for dead, but that he recovered. (Roane Co Family History p. 192)

A Walker relative says that one Drennen girl was raised by a Major Renick after one of the Indian raids left her an orphan

marriage date also showing as 4/25/1786

Her father was Thomas Drennan and was a descendant of Jacob Marlin, a trader who explored the area from Prince George's County, MD to Greenbrier and Pocohantas counties. Marlinton, WV was named for him. Apparently Thomas Drennen married a Marlin.

Notes for James R Boggs:
James R. Boggs, a son of John and Susan (Drennan) Boggs, was born in Greenbrier County VA (WV) May 22, 1800 and moved with his family to Roane County VA (WV), where he died August 11, 1889. He first married Harriet Walkup. Harriet, a daughter of Christopher Walkup, was born about 1802 and died about 1843. James married Lacy Ann O'Brien in Gilmer County VA (WV) in 1845. Settled on Middle Henry Fork then in Gilmer Co in 1846. In 1904 Daniel Dewees reports that "Jim Boggs lived near Linden in Roane County.
Bishop's History of Roane Countynd
Lacy O'Brien, was born in Kanawha County VA (WV) March 17, 1831. Lacy was shot in her home in the Booger Hole area of Clay County WV about 1916 by parties unknown. Hers and other murders resulted in vigilante action and the following notice being prominently posted in many places in the area. "We, the citizens of Clay county, seeing that we cannot get justice by law, have organized the Clay County Mob. We have pledged our lives to drive these people from our county or kill them. If we cannot catch and hang you, we will sneak upon and kill you as you killed Henry Hargis, Lacy Anne Boggs, the old peddler and Preston Tanner." "If before you leave, there is any stealing, killing or burning, we will get the blood-hounds and detectives and run you to the ends of the earth. Nill Sampson, Kooch Sampson, Fred Moore and Aaron Runyon are hereby notified to leave the state in ten days. Rose Lyons, Bill More and Elizabeth Sampson are notified to leave in thirty days."

"P.S. Do not stop this side of the Ohio River."

This incident convinced the local authorities that the citizenry had reached the end of their patience and Howard Sampson was sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of Preston Tanner. No one was ever prosecuted for Lacey Anne's murder.
