100 years ago

No Fourth of July celebration was planned for Marietta because of safety concerns by request of Mayor Leeper. Most families celebrated the day by hanging flags and firing firecrackers.

Reno did have a celebration filled with speakers, a cookout and games for all those who attended. It was estimated that more than 1,500 people attended, a majority from Marietta.

75 years ago

A train wrecked in Little Hocking. No passengers were hurt despite the coach leaving the rail while going 50 mph.

It has been announced nationally that the Fenton Art Glass Co. is one of the substantial plants of this section of the country. The plant reportedly makes $18,000 to $30,000 a month.

50 years ago

Anne Blondin was crowned Carnival Queen in Williamstown.

An explosion in Williamstown resulted in a fire in a new home. Fumes from a cleaner used on the floor ignited when the furnace came on. It's expected to have caused $2,500 in damage but no deaths or injuries.

25 years ago

Alex Wolford, 9, and Carrie Hobbs, 11, both of Columbus, were trapped in the Lafayette Motor Hotel for almost three hours. When they were rescued the two youngsters shouted hoorays.

Roger Schaad of Beverly was chosen to be one of 102 breeders from 20 states who will exhibit their Yorkshire seedstock at the American Yorkshire Club's 1982 Summer Type Conference in Iowa.
