Founder
Harriet Sterling Thompson
1863-1965
During her life in Kappa Phi, Mrs. Thompson founded and was sponsor of Alpha Chapter at the University of Kansas in Lawrence, Kansas in 1916. The other early chapters which she installed were Beta Chapter at the University of Iowa in Iowa City, Iowa in 1917; Gamma Chapter at Iowa State University, Ames, Iowa in 1917; and Epsilon Chapter at Ohio State University, Columbus, Ohio in 1919.

As members of Kappa Phi, we inherit:

Her Dream: "My Daughter Will Weave Her Tomorrow."
Her Aim: Every woman in the university would be a growing Christian and an active participant in the church of today and tomorrow.
The Rose: The flower of the literary society to which she belonged at Baker University.
The Pine and the Candle: A part of the ritual of Delta Delta Delta from which we obtained our Degree of the Pine (Pledging) and our Degree of the Light (Initiation).
The Philitia: She wanted a "love-feast" in Kappa Phi.
The Ritual: Whose words remain with us long after college days.
Her Spirit: To serve, found in the slogan "I'd love to" characterizes the entire organization.
The Hymn: Inspired by her and sung first in her home.
The Constitution: Written in her home by the four college women who assisted her in the founding of Kappa Phi.
A Desire: For creative work within the church.
Her Philosophy: "I have held on tight to the believe that living in the present, with a respect for the past, one obtains a firm hold on the future."

We are grateful she had in her mind, a plan; in her heart, a love for college women trained to be leaders; in her life, the act of service to all mankind that His work might be accomplished.
