| When the production of Panther was on the way, Waffenamt decided to use Panther's chassis for a new assualt gun armed with newly developed 88mm gun. On august 3rd 1944 , Krupp was put in charge of designing this new Vehicle. mass production was to be started in July 1943. On October of 1942 , albert Speer ( Reich's Ministry of Armament) decided that Daimler Benz would continue further development while Krupp recieved the assisting role. In November a wooden mock up was made. On May 1st of 1943 after several modifications and changes the final design was ready which was very different from the wooden mok up that was made in November of 1942. On May 24th 1943 production was send to MIAG ( Muhlenbua Industrie AG ) in Braunschweig because of limited space available at Daimler Benz's Plant in Berlin. In June a model along with wooden mock ups of tigerII and Jagdtiger were shown to Adolf Hitler. though production was ordered to start in December 1943, MIAG started production in January 1944 followed by a second assembly plantin December of 1945 ( MNH = Maschinenfabrik Niedersachischen -Hanover). Third assembly plant (MBA) also started production of Jagdpanther in 1945. It was planned to produce 150 units per month but overall war situation didn't allow the Germans to produce more than 72 units per month. only 342 Jagdpanthers were produced until the end of the war. Jagdpanther was based on standard Panther Ausf G chassis and was armed with 88mm Pak 43/3 L/71 gun (similar to Tiger II), And a Single MG34 for defence agaist infantry and air. The main gun was able to destroy any tank at range of 3000m. Jagdpanthers were issued to indipendent Schwere Panzerjaeger Abteilungen ( Heavy Tank destroyer Battalions). Each Battalion had 3 companies with 14 tanks and 3 tanks were in the Battalions HQ and operated as a part of a Panzer Division. Most of the Jagdpanthers saw service on the eastern front only a single Battalion ( schwere Panzerjeager Abteilung 654 Saw Service in Normandy. Extremely powerful gun and excellent mobility combined with very low Sillhoutte made Jagdpanther a formidable opponent when correctly employed. Jagdepanther was one of the best tank destroyers ever produced but it was introduced too late and in limited number to have any major impact on the situation. |
