| The production of super heavy tanks started in 1941. when Germany invaded the Soviet Union , the Germany Panzers encountered the Soviet Tanks which were far superior to them in terms of firepower and armor protection. On the first months of the campaigne the Germans didn't have any serious problems due to scattered soviet defences and the elemet of surprise. Fianlly it was decided to produce a super heavy tank as an answer to soviet KV I and KVII and T-34/85. The new tank was to protected by 140mm of frontal armor and 100mm of side armor. it was operated by the crew of five. The maximum speed of 44km/h was to be reached with the help of Daimler Benz's 1000hp engine ( similar to ones used in torpedo boats. ) the new tank was to weight 90 tons and armed with 105mm KwK L/70 gun. Lowe would have many common parts with Tiger II in order to simplify the production and maintenance. Designers planned to produce two variants, leichte lowe ( light lion ) with 100mm armor protection and weight of 76tons , and Schwere lowe ( heavy lion) which was protected by 120mm of armor and weighted 90 tons.Adolf Hitler orederd that desin of Leichte lowe to be cancelled in favor of schwere Lowe. In late 1942 the whole project was cancelled in favor of Maus.Lowe project never reache the prototype stage but it helped designers in the production of it's successor - porsche's Maus. |
