| In the winter of 1941 , due to needs of the eastern front , German designers started working on a new Anti Tank gun carrier. They first decided to use Panzer III or Panzer IV chassis for this new vehicle but since they were not suited to be a self propelled mount , the idea of using them was rejected. Instead of the Panzer III or IV chassis Alkett's newly developed Geschutzwagen( Gun carrier ) III/IV was used. It was called III/IV because it was a combination of Panzer III ( Engine, Fuel Pump, driving and steering machenism ) and Panzer IV . In February of 1942 the chassis was armed with 88mm Pak 43 L/71 gun, the result was a tank destroyer , with very thin armor , called Hornisse ( Hornet ). Because of the gun's heavy weight and limited space on the chassis , only a light armor protection for the five men inside was provided. On October 1942 , a model was presented to Adolf Hitler. Hitler accepted the plan and ordered the production to begin by May of 1943. In early 1944, the arrangement of the drivers front plate was changed during production and the gun was upgraded to 88mm Pak43L/71 . These changes led to production of 2 models . By the order of Adolf Hitler the newer model was to be called Nashorn ( Rhinoceros). Hornisse and Nashorn were almost identical. Despite they very light armor protection , they had excellent mobility and a massive firepower. They were an Awesome antitank weapon when used from long distances. From 1943 to 1945 only 474 Nashorns and 20 Hornisses were produced . they were both designed by Alkett and produced by Deutsche Eisenwerke. both units were issued to Schwere Panzerjeager Abteilung 655 and 560. they were first used during the Kursk Offensive. Finally , Nashorns were replaced by more powerful anti tank weapons suck as Jagdpanther and Jagdtiger and.. but remained in service until the end of the war . |
