Wespe
By 1941 when Germany invaded the Soviet Union , most of their light tanks were obsolete and most of them were withdrawn from combat. the German designers planned to use this highly maneuverable chassises as a base to anti tank guns and light howitzers. In mid 1942 alkett designed Wespe . Wespe was a light self propelled gun armed with 105mm light field Howitzer based on the Panzer II chassis. The main Idea behind producing suck weapon was to provide all mobile formations with artillary support. Because of its light armor , Wespes were not allowed to engage enemy tanks , but however they carried some armor piercing ammunition in case of an encounter.
Wespe was operated by the crew of 5, one driver , a commander and 3 gunners. Gunners were also trained to be able to work as radio operators. In order to supply Wespe an Unarmed  Ammunition carrier was made based on Panzer II chassis.  The vehicle was a regular Wespe without the gun .  It carried 90 rounds of ammunition and was operated by 3 men.  159 ammunition vehicles were produced and all of them were capable of mounting a Howitzer if needed.
Wespe was designed by Alkett and and was produced by Famo ( Fahrzeug und Motorenbau). 1000units were ordered to be produced in 1943 , but the number was reduced to 835 in late 1943 including ammunition carriers.  Total 676 Wepse units were produced.
Wespe was attached to a Panzer Division's Artillary Regiment. They first saw action during the Kursk offensive were they proved to be very effective. They saw service until the end of the war . in March of 1945 some 337 units were still operational.
