Early in the morning of August 3rd, Company K sent a patrol to Landivy, 8 kilometers to the east. They found the town unoccupied and outposted it. The French people were very happy to see the Americans, and lined the streets to pelt them with flowers and hand out cider. They even presented the soldiers with the "keys to the city" in an elaborate ceremony. A bombed out bridge necessitated them staying there during August 4 th.

On August 5th, the 3rd Battalion began their longest foot march. They marched 25 miles the first day, 17 miles the second and 20 miles the third. This 3 day 62 mile march was made during days of intense heat and over extremely dusty roads. It was stopped only once because a bridge was out over the Mayenne River, so the troops went swimming there. They crossed over the Mayenne River and arrived at the town of St. Suzanne in the evening of August 7th. During the evening, a small but aggressive German force made a tank led night escape through town.. A vigorous firefight ensued, and about five rounds of tank fire was received in St. Suzanne.
