On 8/26/07, I spotted  Jynger hopping in the pasture where she was grazing.
Jade checked her & found her right front leg was
broken just below the knee.

The vet wasn't open on Sunday, so we put her in a pen with another doe kid so
she wouldn't be pushed around or bumped...the pen is smaller...
which was sure to be easier for her to get
around.

Since she had no fever, very little swelling, & appeared to be in NO pain...
we didn't give her any antibiotics & left her to rest for the night.

The vet in our town only sees "large animals" after 1pm,
so I called him up & asked what should be done til then.

His advice...being she wasn't in pain, had no fever & hardly any swelling..
was to splint it up with
what I had on hand & wait.

I told him that when I
bent her leg, she showed zero resistance..he said it was most likely a clean break.
He also thought NO antibiotics was ok..since it would weaken her ammune system unnecessarily if it wasn't needed, but  if she showed signs of infection, pain, or swelling that I could give her something for it, at that time.

I took a cardboard
paper towel roll (not as sturdy as I hoped, but I used it until I can get a piece of PVC pipe cut)
& cut it straight up the middle. I was hoping it'd fit right over her leg, but she was too big for it.
I also got some gauze to pad the break before I wrapped it with the hot pink vet wrap.
Hey a girl needs blingage, right?
I was going to use the bath "poof" for padding (so her leg could breath),
but her leg is so big there's no room left inside the tube for any padding.

I
wrapped the knee with the gauze padding & vet wrapped it above, below & on top of the break to sturdy it. Then I took the paper towel tube & fit it around the leg..making sure the leg was nice & straight inside it, before I wrapped the entire leg in vet wrap..giving her a very kewl hot pink leg.

I think the splint
sturdied her up quite a bit, but I thought she would have it chewed off in a matter of minutes..
not true..she seems to know it's there to help her & is leaving it alone...for now..

Now...(In Jade's words):

Jynger is BIG PIMPIN'..

I ran down to the feed store & bought a Safeguard wormer block (for Bovine)..
hoping by her licking it, parasites wouldn't attack her body in her stressful state.
I also got her some sweet feed to keep her strength up. I don't usually feed my goats during the summer...instead they spend their time grazing like goats should!.
I do suppliment with  a Sweet Lix- Protein block every few months...but it's not time for one yet.
