We raise
Coturnix Quail  (Japanese Pharaoh)
Sex of each can be determined as early as 3 weeks of age..
The
Male has a solid breast pattern
The
Female has a spotted breast pattern

They are fully grown at 6 weeks and will lay
eggs year round
if they are given enough light and warmth.
females lay one egg per day,
and the eggs themselves taste great.
The birds are raised worldwide for their meat and eggs.

They are very gentle and calm birds
that tolerate the presence of others well.

During the summer months the males
become walking hormones and love to fight.
The fighting is normally not lethal
but they can blind each other if they are too crowded.

They also spend most of their time on the ground..
It is not probable that they will fly around the cages..

We are in the process of
incubating 19 quail eggs..
We use a simple Hova-Bator
incubator
with an
Acu-rite digital thermometer attached with velcro..

*Quail eggs will take between 17-18 days to hatch..
*Temps must be kept between 99.7 & 100.3
*The eggs must be turned a minimum of 3 times per day..
*The humidity here is so high
that we don't add water until the last few days of incubation..

So we'll see how it goes!!

Updates will be posted as soon as the eggs hatch..
Somewhere around:  7-24-03

UPDATE: 7/23/03
