"Those of us who have owned horses are likely to be familiar with the equivalent Herpes virus infection in horses, a disease called Rhino (Rhinopneumonitis).

Rhino in horses is characterized by a mild respiratory disease in most cases, and by abortion in pregnant mares. In the respiratory form of the disease, the horses have a clear nasal discharge, may snort or cough, and have reduced exercise tolerance. It is a mild condition, and unless the horse is being actively used or campaigned, or is pregnant, it is rarely vaccinated against.

The vaccine, somewhat like the common cold virus, does not give a good duration of immunity, and if protection from Rhino is desired, it has been necessary to vaccinate every 4 months.

Rhino in horses also causes abortion.
On breeding farms, an epidemic of Rhino will cause what is called an "abortion storm" in brood-mares. That frightening phrase says it all.
Rhino is highly contagious, spread through the air by aerosols or contact with secretions."
Here are a few very informative links about this virus, prevention, and causes..

Well another hard lesson learned..

This time with Jag our registered paint mare.
She was 8 months bred and hadn't had her Rhino shots..
We waited for the local feed store to get one in and they never did...
instead of driving a little farther and paying a little more..
the 5th month slipped by..then the 6th and still they had no shots in...
then the 7th month...soon thinking she was safe...it slipped our minds...

By not buying that $16 shot...it cost us a perfectly beautiful little Paint stud colt..
The one I had dreamed, wished, hoped & prayed a year for..even had a name picked out for him..
'NESTLES QUIK'
Yeah..I'm kicking myself..and rest assured..
it'll NEVER happen again!!

The pictures are of the stillborn colt as I found him
so if you have a weak stomach please do NOT view them!!
I am putting these pics up in hopes that noone who views my page makes the same mistake that I did...get that shot around the 5th month..then again at 7 months and 9 months...and you'll have a live healthy beautiful little colt...
And remember..if you go ahead and give that shot...
you won't have to deal with this..

Rhinopneumontits Virus
Our mare didn't show any recent symptoms of this..
although a few months back she did act as if she were trying to colic...she laid down on her side where she was usually up and around pretty early..we were all around her and she didn't care..not like her at all..
she didn't want the feed and was very sluggish..so we withheld feed and gave her a banamine shot that day and she was over whatever it was by evening..
Guess it was working on her then...
