Puzzle Lock "Tigerwood"
PUZZLE LOCK - TIGERWOOD
(Goncalo Alves)
History of Puzzle Locks*
Puzzle locks originated in the Orient and had rings or dials  of characters or letters which released the  hasp  when  properly  alligned. These complicated  locks  were constructed to unlock words or patterns  of numbers known only to the lock owners.
Mechanical locks made of wood were in use about  4000 years  ago  in  Egypt.  They  contained movable pins or pin tumblers  that were used in door locks, operated by a wooden key with pegs.
The first all-metal locks appeared around  900A.D. in England.

Inspiration for this lock came from my first exposure to antique Oriental "puzzle" locks featured on the Lee Valley Tools catalogue in February 2000.
Recently, my son asked me to make him a puzzle lock that requires at least 2 keys to be used in sequence....
My puzzle lock is constructed of solid tigerwood (Gongalo Alves), with a black walnut hasp or shackle.
Seven specific actions are required in order to release the shackle from the body, utilizing a combination of dial-rotations, pulls and wooden keys.
Internal mechanisms include an ash spring which engages the shackle.
Dimensions:  5 1/2" L X 7"H X  1 3/4"D
Wood used: Goncalo Alves, Black Walnut, Maple, Ash
