FORT WORTH – Wylie’s wrestling team traveled to Fort
Worth last week to compete in their second match of
the season and returned home with a 46-18 win.

Wylie (1-1) registered seven pins in the match victory
that improved the squad's overall record to 1-1 on the
season. Wrestlers who pinned their opponents in the
match include Blake Giunta (130-weight class), Stephen
Dethlof (152-weight class), Caleb Fisher (180-weight
class), Joe Poovey (215-weight class) and Jack London
(145-weight class).

Freshman wrestlers who recorded pins in the match
include Ricky McDoulett (152-weight class) and Cory
Shields in the 189-weight category.

The team returned to the mat over the weekend to
compete in the Rockwall tournament but were only able
to capture two third place finishes against some very
strong wrestlers.

“It’s really hard being a 4A school and trying to
compete in a 5A sport,” said Coach Danny Blankenship.

“We’re in a district with two of the best wrestling
schools in the state, (Rockwall and Allen), so we’re
up against some very tough competition.”

Wylie competed against Rockwall, Molina, Longview Pine
Tree, Crockett, Bishop Lynch, Quinlan Ford and Dallas
Skyline in the tournament.

Freshman wrestler Nick Seaton brought home the third
place trophy in the 103-weight division while
sophomore Josh Peterson won third place in the
255-weight class.

Blankenship noted that freshman wrestler Cory Shields
took last year’s state champion in the 189-weight
category to the limit before falling in the final
seconds of the match.

Joe Poovey finished fourth in the tournament falling
in his third place match in the 215-weight category.

“I told the kids that these were some of the best
wrestlers in the state,” Blankenship said. “It should
show them what they will need to do to become better
wrestlers.”

Other wrestlers who competed in the tournament
included John Evans, Daniel Morgason, Blake Guinta,
Jack London, Stephen Dethloff, Ricky McDoulett, Woody
Simmons and Caleb Fisher.

This week the team competes against First Baptist
Academy on Saturday.
