JOB FAIR GUIDELINES
Before
the Job Fair
·
Practice introduction or “Tell me about yourself” statement
beforehand.
·
Check the list of employers and prioritize ones most
important to visit.
·
Research the companies (Products, financial history, culture
– atmosphere, do networking. Read job descriptions and newspaper ads).
·
Prepare notes and questions about particular companies ahead
of time.
·
Know the exact times of the Fair and when you will be
attending.
·
Bring plenty of resumes for all the companies you plan to
visit.
·
Turn off or remove watches, telephones, pagers, etc. that
might go off and create a distraction.
·
Good impressions come from inside (positive energy,
motivation, enthusiasm) and from the outside (well-groomed and neat appearance).
·
Bring a notepad and pen, carry a folder to hold resumes,
etc.
·
Relax, knowing you have the answers about yourself, your
skills, qualifications, personal
positive characteristics, and hopes…right with you at all times.
·
Begin and remain positive and enthusiastic.
·
Use a firm and natural handshake.
·
Actively listen to what the representative is saying. Share
appropriate comments and questions.
·
Be clear, concise, and confident when talking about
yourself.
·
You can talk with 1- 3 employers who might be lower on your
priority list – as warm-up and practice. Also, every representative may have
excellent network information for you, avoid “ass-u-me-ing”.
·
In between visits or before going up to a company
representative, check over notes concerning what you’ve learned about the
company and questions you’ve jotted down. Also make any comments or notes from
the previous visit.
·
Talk about job positions, your qualifications and skills,
not $ or benefits. This is an initial conversation that might lead to an
interview.
·
Take notes and pick up business cards.
·
Follow-up !!!! - Using your notes to mention something
specific from the conversation.
