Recycling Soap Liquid soap In a large microwave oven safe glass container, put in all your saved soap slivers. Add about ¼ cup water. Microwave on medium for about 1-2 minutes. Stir with a Popsicle stick. If not melted through or if lumpy, microwave for an additional minute. Stir again. Let cool. If not liquid enough to pump through your liquid soap dispenser, add another tablespoon or so of water and reheat and stir. Cool and check consistency. Repeat as necessary to achieve desired consistency to dispense. If desired, the soap can be melted in a coffee can double boiler. Place soap in a clean coffee can. Place can in a large pot with water about half way up the side of the large pot. Bring to a simmer, and stir occasionally. Add water to melting soap to achieve desired constancy. Just put those soap slivers into the toe of a stocking or knee-high. Tie a knot at the top and hang in the shower/bathtub. It is easier to hang onto, and will let you use the soap until it is gone. Fancy soaps: Melt those slivers of soap (without water) either in the microwave, or in a double boiler. Pour into a waxed paper lined cake pan. When almost cool, cut out shapes with cooking cutters or a knife. Let cool completely and wrap loosely in waxed paper. When the soap is in the liquid stage, a drop or two of your favorite scented oil or perfume may be added. If you want to add color, add a drop of food coloring. Do not go overboard, or you may end up dying your hands when you wash them! To make soap that floats, whip the soap in its liquid state. It will fluff up like egg whites if you over beat, so pay attention. If you do over beat, just slowly reheat until most of the air is released, and try again. |
