Know Your Personality Type
The Opposing Personality is present in the type of person who has a reputation for being confrontational.  They will argue with anyone for anything and is hostile toward anyone who is perceived as a threat.  Although this type of person may not be very sociable, they are almost never viewed as an easy target for assault, sexual harassment, sexual assault, mugging, etc.
The Resisting Personalityis usually non-aggressive by his nature, either verbally or physically.  Hey are  normally slow to anger unless it involves protecting loved ones or They are pushed into a corner and has no other way out.  This type of person can be very explosive without warning when in attack situations.
The Confident Personality will usually fit into social situations, unlike the opposing personality.  They are self-confident, have high self-esteem, and possess a high level of determination.  This type of person has many friends but has a definite attitude of, "Do not mess with me, I never give up a fight."
The Passive Personality projects the attitude of being a meek person who will allow himself to be victimized, socially or violently.  They are quiet and shy and often allow others to take advantage of her. They walk with their heads down and are afraid to make eye contact with others.  They will walk slowly with their heads down as if depressed. This is the type of person that a potential attacker will look for as his next victim.
Which personality type are you?
If you sometimes exhibit traits of one or more categories, you are probably normal.  Everyone feels different at different times.  Sometimes we feel confident and other times we are depressed.  This is why martial arts training is recommended.  Martial Arts training not only teaches people how to defend themselves, it also teaches them how to be more confident and exhibit more self esteem.  These are qualities a predator does not want to confront.  But remember, how you feel can affect how you project your attitude toward others and affect your level of awareness.
Levels of Mental Awareness
Your level of awareness and attitude are what an attacker analyzes when choosing you as his next victim.  Law enforcement uses the following color-code systems to assess various levels of awareness.
WHITE     The white level of awareness means you are daydreaming or depressed.  This level is a complete lack of awareness in which you are oblivious to your surroundings.  When your mind is blank and you are totally unaware, you are functioning in a white level of awareness. In this level, you are totally vulnerable to any type of attack.
YELLOW     Yellow indicates a cautious state of awareness.  This level means you are alert but not quite scared.  This is a very important level in which you will be able to take a pre-assault assessment of a situation. Later we will discuss assessment of uncomfortable and dangerous situations.  This is the level people need to operate in to prevent any type of harassment or assault.  If you see it coming it is easier to prevent.
RED     This level infers danger.  In a red level of awareness, some sort of action is required.  You are anxious about an oncoming attack and you realize that you may have to verbally or physically defend yourself.  You must now consider your options and make a decision.  This stage can sometimes be avoided if you were to avoid the situation to begin with by being in a yellow level of awareness.
BLACK     The color black represents a grim situation.  This is now a real threat and the verbal or physical attack is real and is in progress.  This is a stage you will always want to avoid but you must plan for.  Even a cautious person in a yellow state of awareness can be spontaneously attacked.
Your Personality Type and Level of Awareness are factors a potential attacker will consider when choosing his next victim.  Law Enforcement records show that most people who are verbally, mentally, and physically attacked and abused are stalked by their attackers for at least a few minutes.  While stalking victims, the attacker is choosing which one he will attack based on the above personality traits that he perceives.  Most attackers will profile their victims to make sure they can win.
Assault Prevention Mindset
Spirit     Develop an indomitable spirit.  Never give up !!!  If you have a strong spirit you can survive any attack and can prevent most attacks from happening.  You're attacker is only fighting for your money or body - You are fighting for your life!  Your spirit to win should be stronger because you're life is on the line.
Mind     Use your mind to your advantage. Take self-defense courses and learn all you can about preventing attacks and defending yourself.  Learn to use your observations and surroundings to prevent attacks and defend yourself.  Remember, a smart fighter will always win!  The Japanese call the tightening of the mind ";kime." Kime is done through self-awareness and mental training.  It is said that when the"mind is tight"; (in a state of kime) you are not vulnerable to mental or physical attacks.
Body     Learn to use your body and everything on it as a weapon.  Your clothes, keys, and purse can always be used as weapons.  Your hands and feet can become effective weapons through martial arts training.  This does not mean that everyone must be a master fighter or in great shape to simply defend themselves.  But everyone should learn how their bodies work as weapons and know a few self-defense techniques.
Assault prevention mindset comes from active mental training.  Use visualization techniques to imagine how attacks happen and how you can prevent them or defend yourself.  Take time to learn what your options are in different situations.  Do not look at yourself like a victim. Develop the self-esteem necessary to think that you are worth staying alive at any costs.  Never Give Up! Be ready to verbally and physically defend yourself in any situation.  Being mentally aware of your personality and all your options to prevent attacks and defend yourself can mean the difference between life and death.
Survival Awareness
Survival awareness begins with examining your personality and choosing not to be a victim.  You must develop high self-esteem, be self-confident, and appear to be able to take care of yourself.  The next step is to operate in a yellow level of awareness.  Being alert can prevent you from putting yourself in a bad position or environment. Consider the following tips for preventing attacks.
Personal Weapons
Keys
Hold your keys in your hand and strike the attacker. The eyes are a good target to poke and twist keys into.
Pepper Mace
Mace now comes on a key chain and is usually effective.  Be sure to train properly because mace can work against you.
Kubota
The Kubota is a short, metal object with a point at one end.  Some new models have two spikes on the side and double as a key chain.
Hair Spray
Hair spray can be sprayed into the attacker's eyes and mouth.  Then strike him with the bottom edge of the can.
Knife or edged weapon
The knife is a deadly weapon and also can be a key chain.  When attacked, do not use a knife in an offensive manner or let the attacker know you have a knife until you use it.  He may take it from you.  Wait for him to attack and cut open major arteries.  Take a knife defense course to increase your knowledge and skills.
Firearm
A firearm is usually kept at home. Do not use a firearm unless you have had training. It can also be used against you and your family.  Take a firearm safety course before arming yourself.
Walking or Jogging
Never walk or jog in unsafe neighborhoods.  If at night, make sure the area is well lighted and people are around.  Stay out of wooded areas, dark parking lots, and dark parks.
Be alert !!!  Look around and listen to your surroundings.
Never wear headphones while walking or jogging.  This makes it easy for an attacker to sneak up on you.
If someone approaches you in a car walk in the opposite direction the car is driving.
Walk towards lighted areas and witnesses.  Attempt to see the license plate and color of the car.
Walk on the side of the street facing traffic.
Do not overload yourself with packages when shopping.
Remember, walk confidently, directly, and at a steady pace.  Keep your eyes up and stay alert.  An attacker looks for a woman who appears vulnerable.
Driving Your Car
Avoid driving through high crime areas if possible.
Watch for strangers who approach your vehicle at all times.
Roll up your windows.
Avoid any friendly or confrontational contact with strangers in other vehicles.  Do not participate in "road rage."
Make sure your house, driveway, and garage are well lighted.
Look under your car as you walk to it and in the back seat before you get inside to prevent an ambush.
Leave your car in gear when at intersections.  Always stop in traffic with one car length between your car and the car in front of you.  This will give you a chance to drive off the roadway if attacked or car jacked in traffic.  Do not be afraid to have an accident.
If you think an attacker is following you in traffic, do not go home.  Go to the nearest police station, business, or other well-lighted public area.  Do not get out of your car;  honk your horn for help.
If your car breaks down:  turn on your emergency flashers, open the hood, get back in the car, lock the doors and roll up the windows.  When someone stops ask them to send help or call the police.  Stay in your car and do no accept rides from anyone.
Park in well-lighted, busy areas.
Keep your keys in your hand when walking to your car. Mace, knives, and keys are good personal weapons found on key chains.
Give valet parking your ignition key only.  Do not give strangers access to your key ring.
Equip your car well: flashlight and spare batteries, flares, jumper cables, can of "fix-a-flat", blanket (especially during cold weather), gas can, fire extinguisher.  Also know how to change a flat tire.
Purchase a cellular phone and keep it in your car at all times.
Car Jacking
Do not travel alone if possible.
Be alert for strangers approaching your car.
Do not get "boxed"; in traffic.
Keep any valuables out of sight.
Be aware of "bump and rob''; techniques used by robbers and car jackers.
Never go to crime scene two !!!
If the carjacker forces you to drive, make sure your seatbelt is fastened and his is not.  Then have an accident.  Having an accident is better than going to crime scene two.
Watch for strangers at ATM machines.  Avoid using them at night, especially if they are poorly lit.
If your garage door opener is missing, have the codes changed and change locks on the doors.
Be suspicious of people who approach your vehicle selling items, asking for donations or change, or asking for directions.
Follow all the tips listed under, "In your car."
Parking your Car
Always park in well lighted areas near the main entrance of the building.
Never park next to a sliding van door, especially if the van's sliding door is not facing the front of the business.
Look under your car while walking toward it from the building to check for potential attackers.
Security At Home
Be aware that many rapes happen in women's homes, garages, apartments, and laundry rooms of apartments.
Make sure your home looks "lived in" not like you are on vacation.
Always lock all your doors and windows, especially at night.
Keep your blinds and curtains closed.
Check your doors and windows and frames to make sure they are sturdy. Install dead bolt locks.  Have extra locking devices for sliding glass doors.
Have well lighted outside areas, especially around any entrances.
Install a wide-angle peephole in your door.
Never put your name or address on your key chain.  If you lose your keys, change all of your locks.  Also change all locks when moving into a new home or apartment.
You and your children should know to never open a door unless you are certain who is there.
Put your initials, rather than your full name, on your mailbox. Have an unlisted phone number, or use your first initial in the phone book.
If you hear a burglar, try to get out of the house.  If you cannot, hide until he is gone.  If the burglar finds you, give him any property he wants; your life is not worth any belongings.  Do not offer information about things he does not ask about.
Have keys in your hand and ready on the way to the door.
Examine your house and doors for tampering as you walk up to your house.  Look for toothpicks jammed in the lock, open or jarred windows and doors, and anything else out of place.  If you suspect an intruder is inside your house, do not go inside and "check it out."  Leave and call the police immediately to avoid an ambush.
Try to plant thorny bushes under any first floor windows.
Do not give your identity over the phone unless you place the phone call.
Get a large dog or at least have a beware of dog sign.
If you live alone, have a man's voice on your answering machine.
If someone comes to your door to ask for help, do not let him or her inside.  You need to place the phone call for them.  You should also call the police.
