Based on Ben Dawson's idea, a Steelhorse Tailgate Bin Model 56400 or 56500 (same bin, 1 or 2 bin pack ) I'm doing this as a test run for now, but might go back to keeping my tools in a saddle bag ( easier to carry tools out ) and use the bin for cables and straps instead... then again, I might remove it since it also fits into the roof basket for lockable storage. Or both since I have 2 bins |
Alternative: the bin fits nicely into the baskert. Either a bungie cord will hold it in place, or bolt it directly in for added security The bin itself does have a pad lock hole With the Backet net in place, it really is low profile |
Closed, it gives almost a factory look, not too low. Doesn't block rearward view. I recessed all my tools into 1 1/2" of foam to stop movement and rattles. |
1) I removed the headliner tabs, bored out the hole a touch and installed the mirror anchors, then removed the rear cargo hook. 2) Drilled my first hole into one end of the alum bar, bolted into the mirror anchor, to judge the length needed to make it to the rear, 3) Cut the bar to the right length and drilled my second hole. The alum. is flexible enough to follow the contour without bending. 4) The hard part. I took apart the bin so I could play with the base only. I measured and drilled the 2 ( rearmost ) holes into the plastic base to match where the mirror anchors are. 5) I re-attached the bars and the base to the headliner by the rear bolt. Tied a string from the rear bolt on the bin, to the front cargo hook bolt, it gave me a line to follow. I drilled ( lightly ) along this string through the plastic base and into the alum. bar underneath. You now have matching marks. Took it down and drilled proper holes. Bolted the bar to the base. |
6) A little too much flex with just washers on the interior bolts, so I drilled the left over alum bar for a continuous support. 7) When trying to mount the fully assembled bin into place, I had a hard time matching up to the mirror anchors ( a bit awkward ) > to make it easier, I screwed in long 1/4" rod into the mirror bolts, it was easier to match the holes in the bin while it was lower, I then raised it higher and bolted it tight. Once things were snug, I cut the excess bolt with my dremel. |
Special note..Steelhorse is no longer a supplier, and this may be a harder find.. rumor has it someone else is taking over their line. FYI.. I found the bin at a KMart Stateside *automotive section) |
