Ski Rack Mod |
Use Back Button to Return |
I use a Yakima Powderhound for my skis, nice simple system, it was fine last season when I could install it on my roof and still roll into my garage (barely). Now that I've added some AAL's, this isn't the case anymore. So.... |
I picked up some proper round bar mightymounts from yak (5$ each here) I'm cheap, so I also bought some 3/4" plastic electric piping (4$ for a 10' length, Yak wanted 60$ for a pair of 48") with a plastic shim, it allows the yak. mmount to lock on fine. |
Basic Install, Cut the pipe to length, just under 36" so they fit between the side rails. Drilled 2 holes through and anchored the pipe with horizontal mightymounts. (Longer bolts are needed. since it actually bolts under the MMount) Attached the ski rack to the bar using the standard Yak MMounts. |
For now, I've solved the height problem as well as what resistance of having a flat rack hitting the wind. The rack remains lockable, to tilt the rack, you have to open the jaws (with are lockable) so you can loosen and tighten the wing nut. Someone can unbolt the whole thing, but then again, they could steal the crossbar too even in the stock set up. |
This is my first version, it should help some of you. I'm still playing with some brackets to actually lower the round bar even further, equal to or below the stock crossbar. I use my rack quite often, with the current bolt on, the round bar is slightly above, which screws up long flat loading. |
The way the powderhound locks on, it actually stiffens the plastic pipe, so it becomes nothing more than a hinge pin. |
Please Note: I haven't fully tested this out in frigid cold !! I also used the plastic pipe as an easy material to work with and test my idea and fit. It would be suggested to use a proper yak bar for security. |
