Canadian X's might only come in 4WD... but we don't get tow hooks ( on the 2000 model anyway ).. go figure. You can get them stateside at xterraparts.com .. At a Canadian Dealer.. you can ask for part # 51114-31G00 (also known as a tow hitch for some reason) and ask them for 2 M12 X 50 (1.25) bolts > fine thread, they will normally throw them in for free .. at the depot stores they are known as extra fine thread There are welded nuts on the right side of the frame.. simple install |
Not happy with it.. as well as I wanted a second towhook on the left side, I heard the Steelhorse # 7605 ( 3 hole ) fit the stock as well as the driver's side location. Couldn't be that easy. While it seems to fit on some models, there must be some slight differences. The holes on the stock location measure 7.2 cm C.C. while the hook measures 7.5 cm ( Yes.. Canadian site.. we're metric ) While a proper drill bit to widen a hole is 45$.. ( I wanted a longer oval hole, not a bigger one ) I just bought a 1/4" round metal file for 8$, cut it down, and used my drill press to make the hole longer. You can do it with a hand drill, but make sure the hook is clamped correctly. |
As you can tell, I didn't have to open the hole that much, (Top hook, right hole ) I bored towards the centre.. only because when you bolt in the hook, the backside of the hole will be against the bolt... |
Drivers side hook.. once again, the holes in the frame were too close to use the bolts that come with the steelhorse hook... in my case, some have been able to use them |
I just picked up more M12 x 50 bolts and nuts.. thread pitch doesn't matter.. 12 mm is a touch smaller than the supplied 1/2" so everything lined up. There is a small access hole in the side of the frame to get the bolts in. I first fished some stiff wire between the access hole and the mounting hole, I then used the wire to fish some fishing line between the holes. |
I tied the line to the very edge of the thread of the bolt, then and tied a second fishing line around the head of the bolt (with a lock washer) All I did was pull my bolt in, straight to the hole, once I saw the bolt end by the mounting hole, I was able to lift the bolt head up with the second string and it dropped right in. Installed the second lock washer and bolted on the nut. Nice and snug, I didn't even have to hold the head inside the frame to tighten it up 100%. |
